People are hiking up there. They’re slipping.

Usage of any trail on the North Shore, by any user group, causes, over time, with the weather, a situation where there needs to be trail work. Plain and Simply.

It is usage. Not just type of usage.

The Vancouver Sun

“People are hiking up there. They’re slipping. They’re dislodging earth and rock. They’re exposing roots. They’re pounding over the roots and the adjacent trees are slowly dying,” he said.

Doesn't help that the usage is coming from ding-dongs that obviously think they're above the seasonal trail closure.

Ride, don't slide.

Gosh. And all this time I thought bikes caused the most damage followed by logging and mining, horses, motorcycles. Hikers actually float on a cushion of bullshit and never actually touch the ground.

Debate? Bikes are made for riding not pushing.

Nope. It's water #1 that does the most damage.

Followed by hikers walking around puddles and muddy holes

what a crock. I did the grind a few weeks ago with my two little kids (after a few dry days in a row). It was bone dry to the top. Nobody slipped.

There was one stretch of "trail" where the roots were getting damaged/pounded, and that was not on the trail at all! It was at the very bottom 100ft where people were going from the parking lot to the baden powell, just east of the grind because the gate/fence are locked. The grind proper is armored to the max for the [HTML_REMOVED]100,000 people/year that do it.

I hiked Dog Mountain with my wife on the weekend and we were blown away by just how shit kicked it was. At least half the trail was mud and the trail is getting wider and wider from all the walk-arounds. There needs to be some major work done to it to re-route the water that collects or that trail doesn't stand a chance. Growing up and living in Deep Cove for 30+ years I've seen so many of the local trails nearly ruined by all the traffic they get these days. The lack of maintenance on a lot of the more popular trails on the North Shore is really showing the past couple years IMO.

I blame Obama.

Last year I hiked from Mtn Hwy to Deep Cove along the BP. Forgot how nice that trail is to hike, it was awesome. The whole hike we were stoked for some Honey's maple dipped at the end !

The hike had us in a good and clear frame of mind, just a nice head space . .. .until Quarry ROck. Holy cow was that a poop show. The crowds, the trail erosion, the garbage, people hiking with radios, smoking, etc… I would never, ever say that people cannot use our trails, I think everyone should enjoy it. But, some of these places are absolute disasters on nice days. I feel bad for those people who live right beside the trail access.

Does nobody care about the frogs anymore? And what about the children?

I, for one, won't stand for it. Damn mountain bikers ruining the Grouse Grind.

Time to get Seabiscuit from the stables and go for nice off season ride up the grind. I'll leave some nice road apples on the steepest bits for hikers to slip on and remember, you must all yield to me on my magnificent beast. :deadhorse:

pft land mis-manager is more like it. If they think a sign is going to turn away hundreds of regular users then they have no business being a land manager. Around here, you have to be a people manager too cuz, just like rain, they'll just keep coming and coming.

Yeah… this winter has to stop and get back to normal ASAP. Obviously we need the snowpack, but we also need it to dissuade all the hikers and bikers from "getting after it". Winter is normally a time for the trails to breathe but for the truly hardcore or careless. While the weather is warm, the trails are still saturated. They might seem dry on top but it does not take much to find a perched water table. This weather has certainly put trails behind the gun.

Normally winter is a time of rest. Trees fall across trails, people sleep in on weekends, and trail maintainers maintain. Just not time for any of this to happen. Summer traffic in winter = degradation. No matter how cautious.

Pave the trail.

Maybe compromise and just put down a boatload of crushed shale?
