Not sure you can call 30K a year a living wage here… unless you live with your parents or live with 7 roommates. Not trying to be an ass but living wage I think not. More like entry level wage.

Median income for a warehouse assistant in the lower mainland is actually $14/hour. Don't hate the player hate the Warehouse game. For the job they are hiring for they are paying the going rate that any warehouse in Vancouver is paying.

Like someone else mentioned it's not a skilled job and if you are any good then after a few months they will probably give you a raise. Especially if you prove that you have the ability to show up for work on time, stay organized, not come to work stoned, drive a forklift, fill out paperwork correctly and just generally not f**k up. But the high end of a warehouse employees wage scale is still only about $22/hour unless you are a warehouse or operations manager.

If there was a problem getting labour at $14/hour than warehouses would probably pay more but when we advertise jobs at that price we get dozens of applications. Sorry for the reality check but Oneup isn't the bad guy here.

People go to college and university these days.
There is no such thing anymore as 'just outa school'
News Flash!
You might get a grade 10 high school dropout finding that a good salary. But not anyone with a future. it's a full-time job remember. this isn't an after school part-time gig.

Man, you sound so entitled it's pretty bad.

I know a lot of young people who are taking their time with their education now. Making sure they know EXACTLY what they want to do with their lives before spending tens of thousands of dollars on something that ends up being a waste. Maybe this job would be a good thing in the meantime for someone like that?

And WTF? People are moving to Squamish, and then everyone's like "oh there's no jobs there". So a company who moved there offers up a decent paying job, then people like you jump on the internet and tell them it's not good enough? I bet the warehouse guy at OneUp will be doing better off than the people in Squamish working at WalMart, working the till at the grocery store, serving coffee, or taking your order at Mags (as examples). Why don't you go slam their wages too?

1 minute search-

1000 bux- steep yeah. Sure I could find cheaper if I actually was looking.
That leaves 1100.00 a month. I'm sure you are thinking, how would I afford my $40,000 truck payment?

Could be worse, working/ living in Squamish, in the MTB industry.
Get a part time job if need be to make it work.

$14 per hour is the base rate for temporary on-demand warehouse work. In other words, they don't even interview you. Just wear work boots and show up. Lots of homeless show up for those gigs.

Pay rates start at $14.00 per hour.
Lots of warehouse jobs go double that.

What OneUp is asking for is a lot more than manpower-direct work such as this BC Job advert:

Candidates must have steel toed boots. Pay rates start at $14.00 per hour!

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

- Loading and unloading trailers

- General warehouse maintenance: sweeping, organizing, counting inventory

- Lifting product up to 50 lbs on an ongoing and consistent basis

- Use of power tools to help around yard: screwdrivers, hammers, drills, ect

- Experience using an RF scanner gun to track inventory

Requirements:

- Reliable means of transportation

- steel toed work boots

- Bondable: must be able to pass a criminal record check

- Flexible expectations

If you’re interested and looking for work we would love to hear from you!

Good idea!
Everyone in BC should pay at least $15 per hour.

Figured I'd see this garbage in NBR socialist rant of the day or such not in the Shore section.

The raw, primitive, unrefined trails that see little to no maintenance are the kinds of trails that really build skill. What kind of skills do you learn riding a trail that was made by a machine, groomed to perfection and void of any rocks, roots or other obstacles that could send you careening over the handlebars?

It probably would have been better for them not to advertise the salary for this position given the discussion it has generated both here and in the PB comments.

It sounds like it's not an unreasonable salary given the position, but the mtb crowd buying fancy bikes tends to be at the more affluent end of the spectrum, and for many, an entry level salary is shocking to see.

I'm the biggest supporter of fair living wages but we need to have a full understanding of what the reality is right now

-I made $9 an hour working for Race Face which didn't bother me because I was working for Race Face (late 90s mind you)
-oneup sells enough sprockets to hire someone for 30k a year?! That's a shit load of gears out the door!

So that's about right it seems for someone 15 to 24 years old.Although the general hourly wage in the 25-54 years range is $27.23.
And the average temp job for all wages pays $20.14.

If you are fresh outta school, then Tree Planting at $250 to $350 per day really is a GOOD paying job!

For Metro Vancouver, the living wage is now at $20.68/hr.

Eh, it's fair if you factor in benefits and working 90% time which I assume means a long weekend every second week (9 out of 10 workdays). Like others have said, work for a cool company in the bike industry, good way to get a leg in for a young lad. Guessing said person could probably score deals on bikes/parts as well as having awesome trails at your door.

I made 34k my first year as a CA/CPA student ($40k inflation adjusted I guess), had a roommate and it wasn't the worst thing in the world.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing - $30k for a warehouse employee isn't bad (plus wasn't the job only 9 days every 2 weeks) considering that business students going to top accounting firms are only getting paid like $34k (surprisingly, I think this is still roughly the same starting salary in 2016).

just some basic math for you. at that wage you will be bringing in [HTML_REMOVED]$2000 a month

a very quick estimate of expenses required to live a frugal life style in squam.

rent 700
hydro 60
msp 75
food 600
bike 100

total 1535

none of this takes variables like buying a new bike, getting sick, owning a car, student loans, girl friends…

nothing against one up, but with the increase in housing costs and the general cost of living, it is almost impossible to live on 30'000 a year in the sea to sky. you will just slowly be going into debt. its not a case of entitlement, its just simple math.

of course you have 2-3 days a week to work a second job.

Just a speculative fiction. No cause for alarm.

OK. I will admit I was being douchey and apologize for the same.
It is not an unreasonable wage. And for someone getting into a first real job (not mowing lawns) this probably is a big step up.
I unreservedly apologize for any inference I made that OneUp was not being fair in the pay they are offering.

For someone that needs a job in Squampton, and there are many, this will allow them to move out of their tent on some FSR and rent a room with some buddies that shred.

Although I am reluctant to, I am saying I am sorry.
Sorry to everyone for posting this in Shore News.
Sorry to everyone for doubting what a Living Wage should be.
Sorry sorry sorry.
I will even buy something fancy from them to support the local co.
Wolf Tooth and NSB probably don't pay any better.

*This post inspired by the PM's recent walk across the house floor.

Now this is also wrong :

nothing against one up, but with the increase in housing costs and the general cost of living, it is almost impossible to live on 30'000 a year in the sea to sky.

because that means it is also almost possible.

After Taxes 26K + benefits….
Its a decent wage for a person out of school. It will only lead to experience and possibly finding a good career in an industry they want to work in. Ever heard of having room mates? We all did it, I was making $12.00 an hour right out of school and got by no prob. I also have friends that were shop rats in the ski/snowboard industry that all made connections and are doing great as reps etc 10 years later.

I'm sure it would be a great place to work in a job where they probably say " lets take a 2 hour lunch and go for a ride."

It's pretty good. That's how much I made at a big 4 accounting firm when I graduated with a business degree in 2006. I think that they pay around 38K now for a fresh grad. Plus the hours in accounting are shit, we worked 60 hours a week without overtime pay, and because we were considered professionals, it was totally legitimate to volunteer 20 hours a week, and nobody complained because you needed to get the 30 months of work experience to qualify for the CA designation.

30K, great hours and benefits in an industry for which people are passionate about their jobs, not bad at all.

We all have to start somewhere and it was a great time at 22 to be making any money, living with roommates, and spending everything we made on student loans and beer.
