As many of us know the NSBP has announced they are closing March 30th. Crap mall has cancelled their lease suddenly from what I have been told.

They just put in some new features and a foam pit. This is a great facility and sad to see it go.

I haven't heard that, but would be a typical move by the world's crappiest mall.

yeah, good luck with that petition. Make sure it gets lots of Facebook likes and comments, that might work.

Totally. Sometimes petitions make sense, like the Metro Van one, but this might as well be a petition to impeach trump.

Sorry for actually giving a shit. FYI they are being tossed out for a pickleball club taking the space over. So maybe you can partake in that.

So you're privy to their books, financial and operational decisions? Both the bike park and the mall?

If you actually know the full story, feel free to share, otherwise you've just throwing shit against the wall hoping something sticks, like anyone else.

Bottom line - the malls a business, the bike parks a business. Both are responsible for either figuring out how to operate sustainably, or die. I run my own business. If I can't figure out how to keep it going, or even if I have setbacks that aren't "fair", I don't want a petition, and a petition won't fix it.

If the bike park can't run in a way that makes them competitive with competing markets for the space, that is not the mall's fault. They aren't a charity. You expect what, some type of subsidy?

Although I appreciate and support trogdors concern about loosing a great resource, not everything is about pickleball in an old mall.

Did they attend the November 27 redevelopment meeting?

To achieve this project, the developer will need to pursue an Official Community Plan (OCP) amendment, with this process starting with the submission of a formal detailed application in Spring 2025. This will then lead to a formal public consultation process led by the municipal government in Summer 2025 and the creation of an updated master plan concept based on public input before the public hearing in Fall 2025. City Council is expected to make a decision on the application in late 2025 or early 2026

You are seeing the community reaction because the bike park is loved by many in the lower mainland, especially families with young kids (myself included). Yes it is a business, and so is the mall, but within the context of a dead mall set for redevelopment (in how many years time?) and ownership by QuadReal/BCI aka public pension fund manager, it's not quite so black and white. One question I've seen brought up is potential for public funding to support an indoor bike park, in the way that community centre pools/gyms/ice rinks are.

from what I've heard, the developer (or whoever) paid out the rest of the lease to the owners of the bike park.  So here's 100k (no idea) to close up shop...  pretty easy decision if you are not making the $ to begin with.

Fair enough, if that is the case then fair enough and those guys deserve some money to exit if they were running at a loss for what was really a community asset. I still hope this somehow leads to recognition that maybe there should be public funding to partially support an indoor bike park somewhere in metro Van. There's clearly a desire/need and public good that comes from it, the same as swimming pools and ice rinks. We have outdoor pump tracks/skate parks and their value seems to be generally recognized.

It is city councils who vote on public funding of projects based on the input from their constituents - you.

NSBP was a private enterprise.
