$60 for a chain is a lot. What's it made out of?

thats why you should learn to do your own service and repairs. saves you alot of time and money in the long run.

Being an agoraphobic adrenaline junkie would be pretty convenient, because you could get your rush from just going to the store to get some milk instead of having to jump off a mountain or out of an airplane.

they also call me "balloon"

WAIT

Bro, you got fuckin ripped. It was probably a PC59 chain…$20 USD/30 CDN. If it was a PC99 you'd be looking at about 50 cdn.

Derailleur price is about bang on.

Labor? It takes me 3 minutes max to change out a derailleur including grabbing the part and putting the bike in the stand. 30 seconds to install a chain. add cables and you're looking at another minute or so. At the shop I work at we would charge $12 for the derailleur and 8 for the chain = 20 USD or 30 CDN. Our labor prices are on the higher side, too.

you're looking at about 120

you got gipt, next time and i know that my lbs will do this, but buy the derailer at MEC and get your lbs to install it for whatever price ( cause labour is where they actually make money on) that might save you a couple of bucks

the deore mech is $31 at cost, an 8spd shimano chain about $11. so that plus $30 in markup which is about right, brings it to $61. they musta had some new guy working on your ride cos at a shop rate of $50, they would have doing that repair for over 2 hours. i would have had that done in a little over half an hour, charging 60 for parts, and 20 for labour plus tax. Sport Mart/Sport Chek are evil corporations owned by the Forzanni Group, but their shop rates are cheapo. I work at a Sport Mart in the Toronto area.

Support your LBS, but be ready to pay the price.

You can if it is the older Sram's. I've snapped a few 9.0's and my hanger has been fine

what lancepaydirt said. you HAVE TO learn to do as much as possible yourself. but if they do it at the shop, they can charge whatever they feel is right. we have all been down this road.

zinn and the art of mountainbiking volume 3

pick that up and it explains in very basic trem how to do all maintenance yourself. doing work yourself saves you a lot of cash.

another alternative is to just not break stuff.
