I still buy Dirt uk. That mag to me is the only one that is still relevant and strong. The photo's are excellent, and so is the writing. I think I saw a rather sweet mtb mag in "on The Rivet" and few weeks ago and I wish I had picked it up. It looked really nice, well produced and turned out. Anyone know which mag that might have been? It was in the vein of the Surfer's Journal/Alpinist etc.
magazines
Maybe check this one out…
I picked an issue up a month ago, by far one of the best mt. bike mags I've ridden. Great pictures, articles, and not a ton of ads.
MTB mags in North America don't want to pay for photos anymore, the quality of the images nowadays suck because all they put in there are photos from whoever gives them for free. I don't buy mags anymore either.
I don't really see that as being completely true. If the pics are good enough they will pay. Supply a product that demands a dollar. It is the same attitude as buying magazines.
but also consider what is written a few posts down, most magazines are read at the news stand, not bought. How do you expect a company to pay for your images when there customer is taking the same free route? Its a never ending circle for a dieing medium.
Mountain Bike just kicked the bucket, for a photog that is bad news, they paid well.

"RB: [HTML_REMOVED]#8216;Fat Tyre Flyer[HTML_REMOVED]#8217; [HTML_REMOVED]#8211; your publication and the only mountain bike magazine until 1985, is still the best Mag title I have heard of to date. You reportedly loved doing it, any dreams of a re-launch? Surely there[HTML_REMOVED]#8217;s space on the shelf as the other titles grow ever more similar. ?
CK: A magazine is a life sentence, and I have already paid my debt to society. I don[HTML_REMOVED]#8217;t think the cycling experience itself changes much from year to year, even though the equipment does, and writing for the major publications I found that there was about a three-year cycle and the same articles would repeat, because the mags are for new riders. There are lots of products for mountain bkes, but I[HTML_REMOVED]#8217;m into people, not widgets, and I think [HTML_REMOVED]#8220;bike reviews[HTML_REMOVED]#8221; are bunch of[HTML_REMOVED]#8230;what is that word you chaps use[HTML_REMOVED]#8230;BOLLOCKS. Did I use it correctly?"

I did write that they used to! But not anymore.
It is too bad because mountain biking is an amazing sport. I used to buy mags. I have 3 years of Decline magazines, 3-4 years of mountain bike actions, 2 years of Dirt and much more. I stopped when I realized that they didn't want to pay for images anymore. I used to buy the mags, now I don't even read them if it's for free…
A cover on Decline for exposure instead of $$$….. I'm sure all that exposure will pay for the rent at the end of the month as well as groceries…. or the equipment used to take the photos with…
didnt know nsmb was only for pros
its not, its only for dicks.

Why slag free swag?
ummm, as your doctor i recommend against riding with a scaphoid fracture.
Dirt mag is the only good one left. Decline is all fluff no content.
I never got into Bike mag. Too bro for me, not enough product.
Who said MBUK? That is like MB Action but with a stinky loaf of diaper grease smeared on it.

I knew that would grind your gears.

I was about to say the same thing. I shoot a fair bit for Bike, and get paid well for it.
The only bike mag I subscribe to is the Vancouver produced Momentum but its a commuter mag. Great though.

i used to write a regular mechanics column and some features and reviews for momentum. they pay for photos but the writers are volunteers and, in my experience, are treated like shit. and it shows - their content is nosediving, too. last gear review i wrote for them i was asked to provide a star rating. so wtf is the point of writing a review?

oh shit dude, that shot you had in the last (?) issue - Strahan on the island, double page spread I think with a comment about sometimes you just have to be there - that was mega rad.
Mountain Bike mag died last week after 25 years.

Yeah I used to LOVE magazines, but then the Internet was created…the writing for Bike is not as good as it was and the only other mag I ever bought was MBA…just to read Zaps stupid shit…and well I can not remember the last time I bought a magazine…I find all the info I want on bikes online. Sorry…but it's free and brings me info faster.
