judging by the size of the nail i'm going to go with a small sledge

I think a vicegrip or pliers might suffice. That thing is actually a really long bolt.

Looking at the end, it does indeed look like a bolt, so likely not bendable very easily.
Pack a small hacksaw instead, 5 mins worth of work should do it. (i'd offer, but haven't been on pingu in years)
