I approve heartily of the warning post, photos and maps. That's 30 IQ points higher than most of the crap that gets posted.

judging by the size of the nail i'm going to go with a small sledge

I think a vicegrip or pliers might suffice. That thing is actually a really long bolt.

Looking at the end, it does indeed look like a bolt, so likely not bendable very easily.
Pack a small hacksaw instead, 5 mins worth of work should do it. (i'd offer, but haven't been on pingu in years)
