I'm new here. Are you allowed to bike on Old buck trail ABOVE Mt .Seymour Rd? I was hiking with my kids and saw a few riders pass us. We were above mt. seymour rd. thanks

No you're not allowed.  I saw a few last week.  There are even even big sign posts that say no mountain biking but that doesn't help when you have bikers that likely didn't get past grade two education.

Plenty of disregard for signs in that area. I meet bikers everytime I'm running up there.  It seems like there has been an increase in bike usage of the access trail in the last year or so.

No you are not allowed to bike on that section of old buck. The rule of thumb is that anything east of the seymour road is not permitted for bikes (the Baden Powell - Indian River Climb is the only exception, biking is allowed on this trail). You can get a ticket if you get caught biking in this area, many people on this forum have received one.

That being said, tons of people ride in this area illegally, but they are taking the risk of getting a ticket. A buddy of mine got one last year and it was $150.

some trails end up there.  Nothing is worse than a whiny hiker who think the forest is their own.

Or maybe they'd just like to be able to go for a hike or run without having to worry about bike traffic in an area of a Provincial Park that is designated non-biking.

Yeah I get it, but doesn't this perspective lack a little bit... I don't know... nuance?

I sometimes drive 10-20km/hr over the posted speed limit. I am careful when conditions are poor, and would not do so in residential areas, school zones, etc where I probably drive less than the limit and try to otherwise drive attentively and defensively.

By disobeying that posted sign, am I "purposely breaking the law" and "lying"? I mean, I guess s but generally speaking I try to not be an asshole. If I get a ticket, I pay the "fast driving tax".

I see a lot of people drive like assholes or unsafely but they're obeying the posted speed limit signs, so all good I guess.

I realize it's not a perfect analogy but I think any reasonable person would have to admit there's some parallels.

Be kind. Especially to other trail users that are on a different mode of transport/slower/with kids in tow, etc.

Say hi. Slow down. Say thanks. Don't pound down soaking wet loamers.

Just be a decent person. If you choose to disobey posted signs, be extra nice. Pay a fine if you get one, don't act entitled.

I'd be curious if the original poster has a negative encounter or is just trying to play world police.

If you had a negative encounter. I'm truly sorry. There are assholes around. Unfortunately assholes ride everywhere, and nice people do as well. People should not be assholes regardless of the legitimacy of their chosen route.

If you didn't have a negative encounter and just feel litigious, I'd say the speeding thing is a good analogy. If people are speeding but otherwise not being tools, let them past and get on with your life, you may not agree with it but you'll drive yourself to an early grave just complaining about every single thing every single person does, that you feel is wrong. I'm not saying it's right, but man you gotta pick your battles these days.

Well said.  Disobey the signage, get caught and you pay a fine, simple as that, no danger to anyone and no damage to an uphill trail....that should be open to riders to get them off the road in the first place. A road where hardly anyone is obeying the law, including shuttlers, by going above the posted speed limit of 60 which is far more dangerous than a biker going uphill on a trail they are meant to be on.

I figure that people have worked hard for decades, and continue to work hard, for us to have the trail access we have. Riding on clearly marked hiking only trails doesn't make their job easier. 

Even if that trail would be a great alternative to the road.

it's not a law but an infraction like a bylaw...  less than a speeding ticket.   I can guarantee you more people have their dogs off leash (AGAINST THE LAW! according to you) on that trail than bikers hiking up it.

Why are you even on a biking forum when you hate bikers?  You do any trail work?  Didn't think so.

Well, in a crowded society we all need rules and regulations so that we can get along. Otherwise we have chaos. If one doesn’t like the rules, work with the NSMBA or whatever to see those rules changed. 

I worked with this fellow years ago who got a speeding ticket coming down from Cypress where he had dropped off his son to ski. He was caught doing 80. He was intent on disputing the ticket because He thought the speed limit should be higher. "But Larry what is the limit?"  "60" "And you were going 80. What is your defence?"

It might be that it is a better and safer route. But it is clearly signed as hiking only. We don’t want bikers climbing downhill primary trails or unskilled riders descending climb trails. 

We have been mountain biking the North Shore since the mid 80s but we are still relatively new to the scene. Hikers have been there much longer. There is still opposition to us. It behooves us to play nice. Except for yesterday. Some donkey out for a run on a multi use trail gat all pissy when I yelled at him. He didn’t hear me ring my bell a couple times as I approached from behind. He didn’t react to me saying hello a couple times so I yelled and he jumped. Got all "there’s a million other mountain bike trails". Oh. He was wearing earmuff headphones with the volume and noise cancellation cranked I suppose.
