Fromme parking lot

The lot has been packed lately. On Sunday there were big groups of hikers as well. We got lucky and someone was leaving just as we arrived and nobody was waiting. Usually I don't mind grinding up the road but my son is just getting started and it's hard enough to get him up to Expresso!

I had hoped to use it when riding with my kids as well, but it's a full on zoo.  I've resolved to dropping my boy at the water tower, driving down to Dempsey and Mt Hwy, and quickly riding back up.  While trying my best not to hit any off leash dogs.  What's really unbelievable is how many people are standing around, broin' out in the lot.  The line of cars waiting for a spot be damned.  They should implement pay for parking or build a parkade.

Yep, pay parking is unfortunately the logical solution here especially if it generated revenue for NSMBA. Would also make it mentally easier to just park on Coleman and pedal up to avoid paying.

Still a bit confused as to why so many hikers/walkers go to Fromme. Other than big cedar/kennedy falls or fitness training by running up/down mtn highway what is the appeal?

Just thinking, would the residents be against pay parking? Would the implementation of pay parking cause more street parking?

I did notice a big sign at the entrance of the lot as I rode by that parking is limited to 3hrs.  Is this new or has it always been that way?  Who enforces this 3 hr. limit?

I also saw two kids on dirt bikes riding up the road on Sunday, no idea where they went to ride.

I live near Lynn Canyon Park and prefer riding up to dealing with the mayhem in the lot. The trail up from MV park is great for building fitness and is a fun climb. If you are up for some punishment park (or ride) up on Dempsey and ride up no quarter.  Embrace the climb and you will become a better (or at least stronger) rider.

They must be the nudists headed to the tan club.

I think those guys have gate keys. I wonder if all the parking at the Headwaters being closed down is having a bit of an impact.

Noticed a few vehicles with parking tickets today.  They were parallel parked in one of the cutouts on the right hand side as you climb up between Bobsled exit and the parking lot.  Be wary of parking in areas that are not the lot itself.

Also saw that, as well as the clearly marked no parking/stopping signs they parked right beside. Lot was busy yesterday but nice to not see a line of cars waiting (I was there around 12:30-2:30).

Looks like Lower Expresso is open:   https://www.instagram.com/p/BT1oDyQhKgX/?taken-by=geoffgulevich&hl=en

Looks like a fun little trail. That should give people incentive to park over at Dempsey and should take some pressure off the lot.

The Headwaters road was closed in December. https://www.dnv.org/news/lynn-headwaters-access-road

Time/distance to the Headwaters park is about the same whether you hike in from Lynn Valley Road, or across Baden Powell from the Fromme lot, so I can believe that the closure is putting some extra cars in the lot.

I'm going to sound like a bit of a dick but I really don't like the parking lot on Fromme. It's turned into a zoo on that mountain. I was out riding today and I bumped into 2 groups of hikers/joggers on Ladies. It's pretty sketchy when you're coming up to a roller coaster and there's 4 people in front of you as you're about to commit to a difficult feature. I also saw a group of runners popping out of bobsled, I honestly do not understand this, there are so many places to hike/run, why would you choose a mountain bike trail, especially with the kind of traffic it gets from bikes. And a few weeks ago I was riding lower ladies and almost ate shit when a dog walker with a bunch of off leash dogs was hiking up the trail and snickers decided to run right into my line. Why are the trails up on Fromme are not marked as Mountain bike only, I fell like it's just going to get worse. Can anyone else relate to this or am I slowly turning into a grumpy old man?

No you're not turning into a grumpy old man. Access has been created so people can basically drive right to the trailhead, so it should come as no surprise there is increased traffic. People want to hike in the woods for hours and they don't want to spend 15-20 walking down a paved or gravel road just to access trails - that's too much work. Because of the ease of access, it should also come as no surprise that there are now way more people on the trails who don't understand the nature of the trail network or the potential conflict and injury situations they are creating with their behaviour. The short, inarticulate answer is nobody gives a shit about anybody else but themselves so they're out there doing whatever the hell they want to.
