I was at the premier and I thought it was a great movie which showcased some of the greats in our beloved hobby. I loved seeing the Sam Hill segment personally. I think he is a great rider. Overall, I thought the camera angles and the stunts were crazy and I like it. Yes the music was a bit loud but I had a great time. Good job!!
Follow Me flick
the music left much to be desired, much.
Why is that? I have not seen it.

I liked it! Good cinematography. The ears were ringing for a few hours after. It wasn't the music it was the volume for me. Sure better than watching it on a laptop with headphones!

Seconded. It was a total joke and ruined the film for a few of us.
Also how many sections were sped up do you think ?
None. That is a true fact, do some research into 24fps footage.
Yeah I didn't think anything was sped up, I just think those guys fucking rip.
I'm still waiting for Semeniuk to put out a really good video part.
I dont know where the guys who didnt like the flick are coming from because I left the theater wanting to get on my bike and just rip. Personally thats the definition for a good film in my book… The only section I really didnt like was the dj segment with the distorted colors, it just felt like it didnt fit in with the rest of the film for some reason. The music selection was great I dont know what people are complaining about…do you want a soul searching yoga soundtrack or something? I would have liked if they put in some Kid cudi or rjd2 tho…
Sick flick thats for sure, the editing was great.
edit: I do agree the volume was turned up a bit loud for my taste, but im not complaining
None. That is a true fact, do some research into 24fps footage.
thought not
sam hill part was my favorite, but way to short. holy hannah can that guy ride. made vanderham look like a hack on the trails, and that's saying something

So I just got home from seeing it. I thought it was ok, not great. I liked the opening segment with Sorge and Hunter. Both guys are fast and can really send it. The SSC part was pretty much the same stuff that the Coastal Crew has posted in their clips. The CC has done a better job showing off the SSC than any big budget film so far, IMO. Atherton/Smith in NZ was good. I just moved to Calgary 2 months ago and the Vanderham/Hill footage really made me want to come home and ride in the rain:crybaby:. Too much slow motion, too much DJ (I'm old. The dj scene is lost on me) and I thought the music sucked.
None. That is a true fact, do some research into 24fps footage.
It looked stop-motion to me. Trees and clothing moving unnaturally in the wind. Maybe the playback frame rate was different ?

I saw it on Friday and I have mixed feelings about it… after so many films, they have started to blur, so it's hard for another one to really make it's mark.
However a few things did stand out for me.
I like hearing the rider's talk about their segments and what goes into them.
I like fast ripping on singletrack so all the NZ seggy at the end and seeing the other top DH guys absolutely flying got my stoke level up. I was amazed at how they just seem to bounce over stuff. I love it when I can watch a segment and see what that rider is doing that makes them a pro and not just a hack on a bike. I love seeing a trail that I have ridden being blasted by a pro and seeing how different they have gone down it. Then the next time I ride hopefully I can apply some of what I have seen.
Something that I think might be taken for granted with this movie is how well these guys film. I love how long and continuous their shots are. I hate quick hit DJ style stuff where you just get visually slammed with tricks. A thought in the back of my mind as I was watching was "damn, that must be a super long cable in order to get this shot".
As I said, I'm not much of a DJ / trick guy so I got a bit tired of it but I do respect how freaking big the jumps were in this flick. Wow, compared to 5 years ago, these guys were freaking SENDING it.
I rode Ned's on Sunday and I felt like I bombed down it, riding very close to that fine line of control, but I kept up to some guys I might not normally have. I attribute it to me thinking about just laying off the brakes, pointing it straight and bombing just like Steve and Gee did in the last section.
That made it worth my movie price on Friday night.
I think the more times I watch this one the more I will appreciate it. There will be more to see each time you watch it.
I will say I really liked most (again, not all) of the music, the riding was great. I didn't want the Sam Hill segment to end. I actually heart him, so that was fun. I just think seasons is the best still, but they still do make the best bike porn hands down.
A good sign though is that I thought it was too short, but it was actually really good. It was just so intense all the way through that when it did end I was thought "really?"
:england:
I for one HATE the contrived bullshit narrative segments that seem pretty mandatory in MTB films these days.
As for the comment on long shots, I thought there was waaaaay too many quick cuts. The cablework was nice, but I'd be happy to just see a steady long lens shot panning nicely to show everything most of the time.
We just need to find a way to get the money away from the bike video industry, since it's money that's fucking these videos up. Once they can make good videos without, then they can have the money back.
brb, torrenting.
As the OP, let me give my review now.
I said it was SORTA meh…. not horrible.
First, the video quality:
As someone who has worked in the high-end a/v industry for 18 years, I was having a hard time dealing with the horizontal lines in the picture. After watching the Canucks in glorious HD, it was difficult for me. I don't believe it was the video itself…but probably something to do with video sync, or the connection from the video player to the Projector. Awesome projector, so it's probably not at fault. HD can be sooooo good…and once you get used to awesome images, any flaw can really get under the skin. And no, I'm not one of those freaky dorks that spends every waking hour on geek forums (other than this one!)
Shots and edits:
Nothing to complain about. Some very nice work with the cable cam, etc. And yay… lots of slow motion roosting.
Music:
The Collective, in my opinion, set the standard for music in MTB flicks: Cool vibes, beats, and stuff that isn't super played out. Music is a personal preference. I was super jacked up on the Mos Def track…. it had me bumpin'. Wasn't a huge fan of the "angry" rock stuff, though. Yes, it was a "tad" loud… but I was happy for it when Mos started spittin'… so its probably just a case of musical taste.
The riding:
Totally agree with the NZ stuff being super tight. No question, Smith is awesome fast. But, I'll be honest, the REAL reason I was stoked for this film was to see Sam Hill on trails I might actually recognize. On the Anthill website, they had a Sam Hill feature, which showed him and Vandy at the Corkscrew trailhead. Obviously, they got spanked by Mother Nature, but damn, it was just NOT enough Shore for me. I understand that they were trying to show the world that the Shore isn't ALL about skinnys and wood, but I still would have loved to see Hill on some of the STEREOTYPICAL "Shore-style" features. Anyways, he ripped it regardless, and I would have watched another 5-60 minutes of that for sure.
I can't bash the DJ and Slopestyle stuff…. because I can't do it, so I respect the talent, but again, its not my favourite thing to watch. Whatever, they probably need to include it, because it has huge wow-factor for many.
Overall, the movie was good. I came in with my expectations too high…. and they had some very tough acts to follow: The Canucks 7-2 victory, Seasons, Roam, etc.
Hopefully, they will continue and make more great flicks.
Just saw it - now I want to ride bikes. Super fun film. Will be buying it!
One of my favorites bits was the edit where they cut from a table top in Whis to one at Silverstar - that was freaky cool!
But ya - more trails and ripping and less DJ/slope style and you are there
It looked stop-motion to me. Trees and clothing moving unnaturally in the wind. Maybe the playback frame rate was different ?
Looked like 24fps played on 3ofps timeline.
first 5 minutes got me pumped, then it died. Why would reggae go in a mtb movie? The slow-mo seemed to show that they didn't have enough footage for a complete movie. and why oh why would you shoot racing down corkscrew?? No matter what kind of camera/rider/budget you have - it's not Shandro in Shift.
