Working on Pipeline yesterday and this smart wheel made its first appearance on the trail.

I was impressed they rode all the wood work and 95% of the trail.

EUC - Electric Unicycle

I saw a bunch of japanese tourist in a formal group trying to make it up the climbing trail in Squamish on those. It was an absolute shit show of a disaster. People with zero skills riding the machine trying to make it up technical terrain with switchbacks. Then it started raining. The tour guides made it sound like they were offering something edgy and special. It just looked like everyone was miserable including me. Seems like they would have been a good choice on the graded gravel path along the dike or out to the spit where they'd get a nice view. Instead they were tending to the wounded on the climbing trail.

Imagine a scenario where people didn’t care what you ride and are just happy to share trail riding and building experiences.

Imagine a future where humans can't get a snack from the kitchen without the aid of a motor and they wonder "Why didn't anyone bother pointing out using all these motors was a bad idea when we could have turned this around?" I mean at least someone will be selling us Snack Master 3000 robots to bring us treats so we won't be without Doritos so it's not all doom and gloom even if out vestigial arms and legs won't propel us around the house any longer. ;-)

Holy, just a little bit of a stretch there.

Are you Republican? 😂

Weird comment, IMO.

There is a guy in my neighborhood that has one of those. I see him zooming around town on it, usually dancing to some music while wearing full armor and a full face helmet. Quite a spectacle but he seems to be living his best life.

A guy passed me on far-upper Fromme/Grouse fire road, and because I had my headphones on, he scared the living SH*T out of me. He was absolutely CRUISING, probably 30km/hr, I was surprised how quick the thing was over the rough-ish fire road.

Basically a Gotway RS e-unicycle battery spontaneously combusted and burned his house down.

People need to do their homework and consider just how powerful these batteries are, and the potential for disaster if they fail. Keeping them outside or in a non-combustible container of some sort if inside is a smart idea. The other really big thing to consider is the reputation and quality of the manufacturer. From your link :

"The wheel wasn't even plugged in, I hadn't used it since the night before, and have been using it almost daily since I got it in November 2020 (with a few issues, I've had to replace the motherboard twice and motor once)." (emphasis mine)

I'd say something that has the potential to burn down your house and had those kind of issues is not a product worth gambling on. It's the sort of thing that reflects the changes in human behaviour (in NA at least) since the introduction of smart phones and tech into our daily lives. People seem far less self reliant, less curious and less questionable about details. I don't know if there's a word or term for it but I'd label it clickbait syndrome where our attention span ends after that hit of instant gratification is served up.

That said, I'm still thinking about getting one of these things as they look like a ton of fun.

Yeah, see, that is yet another reason I sold my eeb. I was getting paranoid that it would explode in my garage one day.

NYC is considering banning e-bikes in public housing:

https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2022/09/e-bike-battery-fires-pushing-nyc-toward-a-ban-in-public-housing/

New York City firefighters have responded to 26 battery-based fires in public housing since 2021, according to reporting from The City. That includes fires in early August that killed a 5-year-old girl and 36-year-old woman in Harlem, and a death and injury in The Bronx. And battery-based fires are rising elsewhere in the city resulting in 73 injuries and five deaths, according to Canary Media, with 130 investigations so far this year. It's a sharp upturn from 104 battery fire calls the year before, 44 in 2020, and 30 in 2019.

To ride on the trails? They aren't legal on any of the paths/roads in BC. Granted, that doesn't seem to be stopping anyone.

Not sure about trails but it seems like a great way to get up to Whistler.

Holy, just a little bit of a stretch there.

Unless you've been completely ignoring the multiple health crises going related to sedentary lifestyles you should be able to see where we are headed using motors more and more adding every convenience possible and getting rid of the slightest discomfort.

I did include a hint ";-)" at the metaphorical nature of my post incase someone might not get the intention and take it 100% literally.

If you look up battery fires there are an unsettling number of devices including e-bikes going up in flames. These are very hard to put out and create all sorts of toxic smoke.

Turns out some are recommending putting the batteries in a special cabinet when not in use, at least at the shop level

https://bikebiz.com/e-bike-battery-fires-and-how-to-stop-them/amp/

https://www.asecos.com/Safety-storage-cabinets/ION-LINEhttps://bikebiz.com/e-bike-battery-fires-and-how-to-stop-them/amp/ION-LINE/EN_index_3062.html

But what does that mean for consumers?
