You guys ever considered switching to something like a facebook based identity ? Forgo the anonymous identities ? Might help with the how some of the threads devolve into nonsense if people had to put a face to what they are saying.

You don't use an anonymous identity on Facebook?

Sure you could have an anonymous facebook identity, but I would think they tend to stand out and are easy to identity. Why doesn't Joe have any friends ? derp - flagged and denied.

What? How?

  1. click on your username in red near the top right of your browser window while in the forum
  2. click on User CP on the left of the top black navigation ribbon
  3. scroll down and click Edit Ignore List under the heading Settings [HTML_REMOVED] Options in the left menu column
  4. in the Add A Member To Your List… field, type the name of the member you'd rather not hear from again
  5. enjoy

see? morning improved!

Getting back on topic, whenever I read a contentious article on a major news media site I always look forward to the calm and reasoned Facebook powered discussion that ensues.

Not looking for calmed and reasoned, at least not here. But some of last few posts on the 'dear nsmba..' are bad.. racist, slander, muck racking.. lowest common denominator type discussion. Doesn't do anything to improve the thread, and reflects poorly on the community.

Perhaps an attempt at removing some of the anonymity that people hid behind might help raise the level of discussion? Anyone else have other ideas that might improve the level of discourse ?

It's an issue all forums face. I would guess people often post on forums because of the anonymity.

Take forum discussions with a grain of salt.

Perhaps you are overly sensitive.
