Cypress - some good news!

Everyone knows that riding on Cypress is changing and will see major changes in the future. Some of it is good, most of it is terrible, but it is what it is. We all need to do the best we can to shift things from the terrible pile to the ok pile and keep everything we can in the good pile.

The developers and DWV are, in my opinion, doing their best to do the same when it is possible. Its a fact that there is going to be rampant development on the mountain and MTBing will be broadly and negatively impacted, but I want to deliver some better news today.

Many of you have seen the below overlay showing:

1) That a proposed multiuse trail (above the 1200ft ceiling for development) was going to occupy the same spaces as SOB, SexGirl, parts of PullTab and some other things,

2) That Roach Hit was slated to become a pedestrian path.

IM PLEASED TO REPORT THAT OUR VOICES WERE HEARD! I dont know who paid for the survey to realign the multiuse path, but they now have it avoiding SexGirl and SOB. AND theyre moving the pedestrian path west of Roach Hit. We dont know exactly where other then we have been told that theyll avoid RH. RH might have a sidewalk on it (LOL) but RH lives on (or it seems it may today).

Celebrate the small wins when you can. Communication is working - the teams on the other sides are listening and modifying their plans and collaborating when they can. Lets keep playing the long game.

Revised Recreation Network Plan is what was released today showing the above modifications.

Congrats on your work on this, Dave. The realignment of Powerline Road would've impacted more trails if you didn't push for changes.

Details are at https://www.westvancouverite.ca/upperlands, but I think riders will be primarily interested in FAQ #22:

22. What will happen to the mountain bike trails in the Cypress Village planning area? BPP will contribute $500,000 towards formalizing a network of authorized mountain biking trails in Cypress Village as part of the plan. A subsequent, separate planning process will formalize, plan for, build, and set out the approach to managing these trails, which could be similar to the recent partnership between the District, BPP, and the North Shore Mountain Bike Association (NSMBA) that has involved formalizing three existing mountain biking trails outside of Cypress Village and building a new multi-use path in Rodgers Creek.

The mtn bike community will be consulted on plans for the mtn bike trails. Lots of work ahead!

I didnt even see that!!!!

Times are changing - it will be different but the folks on the side of the table are trying their best to give the MTB community the best outcome possible.

Thanks for the update. Is there a general timetable for when they'll start breaking ground on the actual buildings west of the first switchback?

This is part of the planning process by the DWV Planning Dept. Construction start is up to BPP.

But you raise a good point. You can ask that question at westvancouverite.ca/upperlands.
