Yes, other items are important too, there is no a silver bullet.
Additional benefits of VO2 training (above LT) is a possibility of training of fast twitching muscles. These are also very important for longevity and quality of life. Fast twitching muscles training is all about power (a force within a time), and could be trained in a gym or e.g. a sprint uphill.
Just noting the fast twitching muscles since they were not mentioned in this thread.
Strength training is using fast twitch muscle fibers. Unfortunately though, sprinting uphill is not going to deliver anywhere near the type of improvements in muscle strength and size that can be achieved with strength training.
To each their own, but the science/ research is pretty clear on the benefit of strength training and it's something everyone should be doing with enough weight/resistance that will challenge them in a range of 6 to 12 reps.
