Funny I was reading this and the name "Dave" came up and I immediately thought to myself I wonder if they mean Dave who started Airbomb…sure enough. I ordered a bunch of stuff through Dave back when he was doing it all by "word of mouth" out of his house (1997). I saved a bunch of money but there were multiple screwups and it took like 6 weeks to get shit. I stopped using him back then.
Actually the event that caused me to stop using him was this. A friend of mine here in Nanaimo has a rich pathologist dad who had been ordering tons of stuff from Dave. Well this doctor goes to pay for a last minute $5000 ticket to Paris to go pick up his daughter (it was an emergency) he goes to pay with his credit card and it's refused (maxxed out limit)…he's like what the fuck. He makes some calls…turns out Dave who has his credit card number on file has used the card to "borrow" five thousand bucks…he thought noone would notice.
This is not just hearsay. I can confirm this story as I know the guy who had this unhappy incident happen to him.
Dave, you're a very bad man if this is all true
Yeah unfortunately not hearsay. I have left out names of those involved out of respect but it's true all right. The friend I'm talking about is a founding member if not the founding member of Team Puke…
WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY, IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH.
purchasing on line won't save you any money in the long run.
i shop at one store. never question the price they charge and always do VERY well in terms of savings over the year/decade. i have sent tons of new riders there over the years and they are always treated well.
I just bought online for the first time because it was a much better option. Blackspire Stinger chainguide, according to their website, has an MSRP od $30CDN, is listed in the Norco catalogue for $75. Since Norco is their sole distributor, that means canadians are screwed. I contact BS, they were less than helpful, and I have yet to hear back from Norco about the pricing. In the end, I bought from Pricepoint for the US MSRP of $25. If I had just bought it no questions asked it would have cost me over twice what I paid.
I would love nothing more than to support the local businesses, but I have to question everythign and draw the line somewhere. If noone questioned the prices (which few do), then the industry is set up to fleece us. Not everyone can get hooked up with deals through a store, and to those people, I understand why online is a better option.

Bit of a side not here but a buddy of mine picked up a Stinger from Steeds for $30 and I got quoted the same price from AKA.
It's all about fun.

I am going to add my little bit here now… just to stir the pot!
I ordered a wheel… about $75.00 some blow out deal because I destroyed my hub and I figured why not! So I ordered it and it took two weeks after I had been charged for them to tell me that the wheel wasn't in stock and that they would have to build another one.
Anyways a nother two weeks passes and finally I email back and get a reply stating that the wheel will not be ready for another period of time so I decided that I would buy it elsewhere, so I changed my order to brake pads and they credited my account on the phone and I have yet to recieve them.
That was a few months ago.
I took the loss as my stupidity for buying online, but I am going to go back and see what activity has happened on my account because I never really check it.
People should not have to put with crap companies… these poeple should be shut down.

I didn't try Steed, tried Blak Dog, Edmonds, John Henry. I told Nigel at AKA about hte part, he was impressed with the price and said he would look into it, I guess he must have had some success.
Gary, I know what you are saying, but in this case, the problem lay with the distibutor who remained somewhat untouchable. I stand by my decision to buy mail order from the information at the time. If I knew that I could get the part locally for the MSRP, then I would do so in an instance. I will support the local economy over mail order any time, but I will not pay what is obviously a mistake and I can only go so far in trying to resolve the problem.

If nobody deals with these companies they will be shut down by going out of business ,but someone always takes the bait … even buyers who have read all the posts on all these threads going back years
I can give a couple reasons why I order online:
My LBS is the biggest rip off ever, The guys there are very unfriendly, not helpful at all. And they cant order in certain products such as a helmet that I wanted. There is another shop down the road but they are more street/dj oriented and he doesnt carry much in stock.. I went in looking for a rim and all he had was a H.E.D. rim that was horrible. I could always drive 40 mins to a shop in Victoria but thats not convienient at all.
I order from pricepoint most of the time, sometimes Jenson and they are great. Bikeroom = horrible and I hope they dissapear soon.

It looks like Bikeroom has finally taken the last step to being no more.
As of Jan 23, 2007 the site down for maintenance and all voicemail boxes are full. Last week it was inventory, sounds like Bikeroom is bouncing down into bankrupcy or some other type of legal protection
As much as they have been a pain in the ass, they have also been good. Like many others here I do support my local shops (I am a bit of a gear pig) but I also like to try a get good deals so I can continue to play with new gear, then pass on the good deals to others when I move onto other new gear.
The only options that now exist are, US online shops, which sometimes have okay deals or the LBS. The biggest problem with the LBS is not actually the LBS but higher up, the Canadian distribution. Not everything is run through Norco, but much of it is. Price fixing might be a little strong, but when a product is offered as three separate shops and the difference in price between the shops might vary between xxx.88 and xxx.99 I get suspicious.
The bike shops do make money, but I believe the big money is the distribution not the retail.
Just my 2cents, perhaps others here might be able to shed more light on Bikeroom.
How sure are you that Bikeroom is finished? If so it would make for a awesome business venture. Nothing like being the only one in BC I think?
As far as Bikeroom goes I guess I am a lucky one because I have ordered quite a few parts off them over the last couple years and they have always delievered within 5 days other than one time around xmas where it took about two weeks but if I need parts quick I go to the LBS and shell out the big bucks. The only thing I would say negative about bikeroom is there email responses, they respond promtly but with nothing more than the answer as short as possible, not even a have a good day etc. To me that is weird.
Just so you know I have no problem supporting my lbs but my kid breaks bike part like a 2 year old breaks crayons and I am not rich so I have do what I can to keep us riding.
I think that bike parts overall are a rip off. I have always thought that but I just got into dirt biking again after a 30 year layoff and the parts for my dirt bike are so much cheaper in comparison it is crazy, even the riding gear like gloves and jerseys are like half price. Go figure? I can maybe see the big mb prices for custom frames and that sort of thing but the manufacturing of bike parts is so big now and there is only so many big name companies producing forks, shocks etc the prices just dont make sense. I bought a older dirt bike and it has two rear shocks that I just with two top of line brand new one with springs etc and it was only half the price that I pay for a mb shock.
Sorry for getting off subject.
websites do sometimes go offline for maintenence.
and bikeroom's voicemail boxes being full isn't exactly anything new.
i wouldn't necessarily take that to mean they are defunct.
ride a horse! 1200 pounds of raw muscle, power, grace, and sweat between your legs…
but riding bikes is still fun!
