Honestly, who cares?
Ride whatever you want. As long as you follow proper trail etiquette and so on.
And in the case of competitions, different categories sounds like the next best thing.

this reminds me of something. at sea otter just watchin the dirt jumping, it was like bmxer bmxer bmxer bmxer bmxer mtn biker bmxer bmxer bmxer mtn biker … the number of bmx'ers on mtn bikes way, way outnumberd the true roots of the sport. it was actually very, very frustrating … its hard to explain but i felt very frustrated… but then my hopes went up again when a mtn biker won the comp. but still just watching everyone jump … bmx bmx bmx bmx mtn bike bmx bmx…. rather gay if u ask me.
 thats so lame, bmxers are getting into the mtb scene cause its fun to ride the big wheels. the bikes open up new options on a bike, you should be proud that our style of riding is getting more popular.
Its so pussy to exclude others from riding, i started out on mtb, but i ride with lots of bmxers, i have no problem with that. People that cant handle bmxers coming in a being good are so lame, they have such a larger base and history its no suprise that they are doing good.
Edit: If you get beat by some one a a dual 24 bike than either take off your purse and step your riding up, or if your so convinced the two inch smaller wheels helped the dude win than get one yourself and see how you do. I predict there is no difference, freaking pusssiesssss
i can see why the idea came about for comps - just like trials - you could have mod class and 26 (or whatever its called). But DJ contests are more "cool" than "rule" IMO (just as likely to be a jam format as a straight out best trick dealie). If you start throwing in rules like that in the mix then the whole thing will become as irrelevant to most people as mod trials bikes are to the real world….
P.S i know someone who dirt jumps quite well on a 7" FS bike with 24" wheels, which category would she be in?

Minority.
The whole descrimination in the industry has been going on for some time now. It's quiet ridiculous….24", 26"…rigid or suspension….single speed or gears, pegs or no pegs….1 or 2 brakes…
It really shouldn't matter, riding it about having fun and if competitions are going to exclude people for riding what they like they this sport as far as competitions are concerned is gunna go to hell in a hand bag.
I personally ride 26" wheels, ss, rear brake, and sc fork…. but w/e someone chooses to ride is there own personal choice.
Everything you have said Chris is greatly appreciated and well thought out and put together, PROPS!

dude two days ago you were all for the 26" wheels only and suspension forks, why the change in heart?
:ireland: Pickem-up Truck
24" wheels, no front brake, no gears= cruiser BMX.
just ride a bmx. wheel size has long been the determining factor in what kind of bike ones bike is.
I agree with those that say we are better off to forge our own identity.
stick with the 26's.

i dont think u guys understand that this whole conversation deals with competition !! not just riding. i dont care what you ride.
honestly how many bmxers enter mtn bike comps bcuz they are fun ?? not many. its all about the BLING ! especially when a bike that feels alot like there bmx can be ridden.
i dont understand the whole movement towards bmx (24,pegs) i thought mtn bike street was about utilizing what WE have and they dont !! o
obviously bmxers will push our sport and thats good ! BUT what kind of sport is it if the only differance between it and bmx is a few inches on a wheel size.
i dont think this has to do with peoples riding preference i think its an attempt to save and grow what mtn biking is. all the best riders use gears, 26's anyways.
Funn stem and bar - 20 bucks
^^ Good points.
we are so far off of BMX in our riding progression. The closer our bikes become to 20"s the less of an excuse there is.
the bottom line is if you want a frickin BMX why spend 1500 on a MTB?
as for competition etc……26" all the way, otherwise I will just watch the X-Games and wtach guys on real BMX's and no excuses.
Turning your MTB into a BMX is lame only if you try and pass it off as a MTB.
Ride what you want, but folks are always gonna have a comment.
Take yer MTB to the woods, and yer 20" to the street.

OBVIOUSLY……I'm a freak for running dual 26's with rear brake only and only one gear. But anyways why should we be limiting ourselves, what I thought was cool was that little Red Bull comp a few years ago, it was a dirtjump comp and it was BMX and MTB AT THE SAME TIME!!! It was pretty cool, lots of stuff got thrown down and a MTBer won it (Chase) Sure he was 26 but there were a lot of 24 shredders there too.
I troll shitty posters like yourself, because it's amusing to watch you skidmarks get all riled up.
Chris and I were discussing this at oak the other day.
I dont think that 26 and 24 should be such a big deal. I think both have advantages and disadvantages. I personally ride 24" wheels. Not because I thought I was "cheating" the sport but just because I thought I would like it better. I bought them before i knew it was an issue.
PS my guess is cowan is upset because he got beat at his own backyard jam.
what happens to me? i have 1 26" and one 24"…
i thought i would chime in in the subject. natural progression of the sport of mtbing in vancouver area brought ladder bridges and such to the shore and with the advancement of bike technology the trails progressed as the bikes did. when some smart folks started building dirt jumps for their mtbs they rode the same hardtail on these jumps as they rode on the shore but like on the shore as the jumps got more advanced they started looking for better tool to do it with. some people feel that for dirt jumping that 24 inch wheeled mtb is a better tool than is great, there is no advantage or disadvantage i have riden both and both have different characteristics to offer the rider. if 24 are as bad as some people say then it will just be a fad that disappears like biopace or shockstems. i think that people who ride cruiser esk mtbs will start to miss the true versitillity of a mtb and that will push they back towards a more conventional mtb set up

If restrictions like wheel diameter in competitions is an issue, wouldn't it be a natural progression to put everyone on exactly the same bikes with identical set ups then too?
--no personalized set ups.
Or F1 restrictions to keep it fair.-everyone must run the same inferior tires and can't fix their drivetrain more often than every second comp.
This sounds like a lousy thing to do to a chilled sport like MTBing.
I think you all have missed the point. 24" wheels, no front brake gears or shox = a cruiser BMX……………
no one at the contests is concerned with advantages, its about keeping it MTBing.
All the hot street guys I know like Porter Chase, and guys like that will only ride 26"s otherwise they know they are getting too close to BMX if they switch.
whats the point of calling yourself a MTBer when you ride a BMX all day???
