This weekend starts the winter trail building Clinics.

First meeting

Sunday Nov 30th 10AM - 3:00 PM

Location - Ladies Only

Each section below will represent 1 or more days worth of clinic until each person is happy with what they have learned.

Below is a quick summary and 2 sub levels "their are more"

- Researching work site
Taking your time.
look, look and then look again

- Gathering materials
That Mound of Moss could be a treasure
Learning what you may take and not

- Rock work
2 shovels and a pillow case, you can carry anything
Bigger is always better

- Wood work
The grain 101
Keeping it old school

- Drainage
Working with the water
Understanding erosion

- Work site cleanup
* The ghost approach [HTML_REMOVED] how to master it

- Alternate trail routes [HTML_REMOVED] blocking braid lines
Fall lines
closing routes forever

- Addressing Hazard areas [HTML_REMOVED] dangerous object removals
Blow downs [HTML_REMOVED] safety
Removing hazard trees

- Leadership [HTML_REMOVED] directing others on the job site
Having the right attitude
Coaching 101

We will cover each topic in detail over each clinic. Notes will be taken [HTML_REMOVED] sent via email to each person who attends. If need be we can spread each area of interest over more than one day. If
weather is not permitting we will have slide show and work clinics off site.

The goal is to get as many people trained up as trail team leaders before the first trail day of 2009. Currently the NSMBA only has 5 or so trail leaders at each trail day and over 100
people on average with little to no experience in trail work.

This leaves them overwhelmed with a 10 to 1 ratio and lots of people standing around wondering what they should do.

Our goal here is to give the NSMBA a fresh new team of trail leaders for the 2009 season with at least a 1 to 5 ratio so the work on any given trail can be spread out, thus making work go much, much faster.

All that has been learned to this date has been from the following in which I am grateful.

Trevor - The man behind everything I learned
Todd - Keeping me honest in threatening to tear my work apart
Karen - I always go to your trail when I am stumped on wood structure work

Reply everyone who is interested and I guarantee a great time.

Lets pass this on to all who want it!

RE: hazard tree removal

keep in mind WCB views anything [HTML_REMOVED] 6" (and standing) as requiring a WCB certified Faller to fall it.

just a heads up when teaching clinics. (liability and all…)

I'll be coming along from the lower mainland and have space or two others if anyone wants a ride.

Ken, just to be clear, are you talking about meeting at the bottom gate at 10am or on the trail/at the trailhead?

I just started riding the shore after the Whistler season ended and I absolutely love it! I'm stunned what was build here and can't wait to support the trails! What a poor choice of spending all the weekends in Whistler but I didn't know better.
Thought it might be better to learn during the winter so I know how to give back to the trails next summer season, so I would like to join you tomorrow!
If you think its not a good idea, let me know.

Where exactly are we meeting? Directly on Lady's or at the gate?

Sunday turned out to be a great day.

A Big thanks to Bob, Dale, Paul and Rob for all stepping up to get this idea rolling.

They all managed to find some of the hardest to locate material on the shore, in my opinion that is :)

The next class will be this Sunday Dec 7th.

We still have open spots for 3 or 4 people so send me a private message and I will get you the details and course material sent out to you.

Cheers!

Sounds like an awesome idea. I'd be in if only I could.

I really miss the face-to-face talk and approach when gardening in secret.

I'd be interested, but I'm at school in Seattle. Any possibility of a clinic some time between dec 15th and Jan 3rd?
