Nice build Lou.
I am interested if the front brake lever has enough fluid movement when split to run two calipers?

Its a close hydraulic system, much like a parallel electric circuit.

As long as there is fluid in the reservoir, every circuit (caliper) receives the same amount of pressure.

It only gets dicey when the pads have worn to backing plate, and the reservoir is tapped for fluid, then strange things happen, but Tara, as an intelligent bicycle rider, with lots of support, will NOT WEAR the brake pads to nothing…..

its all science (physics actually), thank god for NEWTON and everyone else!!!

Merry Christmas Lou,James etal at Obsession Brent

The raw, primitive, unrefined trails that see little to no maintenance are the kinds of trails that really build skill. What kind of skills do you learn riding a trail that was made by a machine, groomed to perfection and void of any rocks, roots or other obstacles that could send you careening over the handlebars?

Hey Lou, I am trying to get a list together for a post on what bolts on our machines to use grease on and what bolts to use loctite on and would love to hear your opinion.

Here is a list of bolts that I can think of on a bike, please ad any you can think of and any tips that you may have regarding this topic.

Stem bolts -
Seat Post bolts -
Seat Post Collar bolt -
Rotor Bolts -
Cranks 8m Bolts -
Chainring bolts -
Bottom Bracket Shell -
BB Interface -
Pedals -
Flat Pedal pins -
Caliper to brake bolts -
Caliper to frame bolts -
Pivot bolts -
Shock Mounting bolts -
FR/R Axle threads -
Derailleur limit screws -
Bottle Mount bolts -

Ti bolts?

Any tips for our readers?

Thanks man.

Sorry I'm so late for the reply…

Here's what I think:

Every bolt either gets greased, or loctited, or Ti-Prep'd

Use Loctite if the bolt never needs to be turned, RED if the the bolt NEVER needs to be turned, and Ti-Prep or copper compound on ti-bolts.

As for your list:
Stem bolts - Blue
Seatpost Bolts - Blue
Seatpost Collar bolt - Blue
Rotor Bolts - Blue or White
Crank 8mm bolt - grease
Chainring bolts - grease
BB Shell - grease
BB interface - grease
Pedals axles - grease
Flat pedal pins - Red
Caliper bolts - White or blue
V-Brake calipers - grease
Pivot bolts - Blue
Shock mounting bolts - Blue
Axle threads - grease
der limit screws - Blue
Bottle mount bolts - grease

Ti bolts - Ti-prep or copper compound.

ADDITIONAL:
Q/R skewers - grease the whole skewer. But not the pivot point where you close it.
Fender/Rack bolts - Blue
Headset top cap preload - grease
Brake lever bolts - White or Blue
Grip locking bolts - Blue
KickStand - Red
ISCG bolts - Blue
Fork pinch bolts - Blue
NO GREASE in ANY DU bushing, clean!!!
Banjo bolts and Brake hose fittings - NOTHING.
15mm/20mm/thru axles - grease on the threads and on the axle.
Derailleur hanger bolts - Blue
Frame Housing/Hose holders - grease
Rear derailleur - grease
front der bolts - Blue
any cable fixing bolts - derailleurs, cable brakes, Adjustable seatposts, rear shock/front fork (lockouts..) Blue.

Seatposts - metal post, metal frame - grease
- carbon post or carbon frame or both - Carbon paste

Headset crown races - grease when you press 'em on.

any cartridge bearing - thin coat of grease on outer race and the inner race.

I think that covers just about everything, other than carbon framed headtubes and carbon framed bottom bracket shells…

But ALWAYS use proper torque!!! Make sure every bolt is tight, but not too tight!
and NEVER - "I think its tight enough" - tight…. Make sure, BUY A TORQUE WRENCH!

Hey Lou how tight should my rear cassette be when I reinstall it after cleaning or replacing?

TMack - the book says 40Nm, so 'make a face' tight.

I use a 12" wrench and it is damn tight

Let's give this a try. Can the tension spring from an X.5 (or X.3, or X.9) SRAM rear derailleur be used to replace the spring on an X.0 derailleur?

Thanks!
