For those guys who want to learn to work on their own bikes we are offering our annual Mechanics Course.
The first session is Wednesday March 25th 2009 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm and is $25.00. This course introduces the mechanically inclined to the basics of wheels, hubs, head sets, shifting and braking systems as well as a question period with some more specific mechanical instruction.

sooo… I have a really old bike that I go really fast on so fast I have to strap my helmet down extra tight. its a 1983, norco bigfoot and I use it for the epic rides to get around town. however the back hub is done. it is a bolt on hub, and the bolt is stripped from various unexpected sick grinds on various unexpected objects. not to mention it has a nice gravely feel to it. I was wondering if it is possible at all to replace that bolt? or if I should just get a new hub? could you please PM/email me some approx. prices? ( I know its hard when you don't have the exact specs but it is either a 6 or 7 gear hub )

thanks!

So basically it's just the nut on the outside you need to get off and put a new one on? Should be reasonable if the threads are not in poor shape. If it's an older freewheel style hub you'd likely just plug a new wheel on it for the money.

I'm thinking of Changing the gearing on my stock 08 Norco six 2. Chain rings from 24t /36t to 22t/32t and rear cassette from 11-32t to 11-34t. (I need help climbing hills). Do I need to replace my medium cage rear derailleur with a long cage?

hmm.. not quite sure what you mean but I'm talking about the actual bolt. The threads are in pretty bad shape. the reason I can't use the hub is because the nut wont tighten on because of the stripped threads, so that is why I was wondering if the bolt itself could be replaced somehow.

I think you are referring to the axle? If it is the axle that is stripped as well as the bolt you'd need to bring it in and we would do our best to match it up for you.

No need to replace the derailleur. The long cage helps with the difference in chain length if you are running a 44-32-22 or something similar up front. You will be fine with your set up.

If they are deep gauges in the fork legs laterally there is likely something serious happening inside. Possibly there is some serious badness living inside your fork seals and digging in wrecking the stantions. I would have your fork serviced as soon as possible to assess the damage and prevent further damage.
