I tried skiing this weekend and think I want to switch from boarding.

5' 11", 175lbs, sz 10 boots. What should I be looking for?

Reading online says 163-170cm ski length with a 49cm pole length? Can't remember what I used when I rented this weekend.

At your size for a widish 100-110mm underfoot pow ski I would go longer more like 180-185 with early rise tip

49cm is pretty short you would probably look more at 120-130cm pole, you can always cut a long pole shorter

get red boots (just kidding) the fitter should be looking at your foot, measuring it with a Brannock device, doing a shell fit and putting you in a boot that is right for the shape of your foot and your ability

I would try Destination in north van or Fanatyk in Whistler

170 is really short….and you'll definitely want poles longer than 49cm, unless you want to hang in the park with the jibbers…

I'm about the same height as you, a bit lighter, I run longer and fatter skis all the time, but I think you'd probably want to shoot for something 175-180ish and 100mm underfoot for some float. Look for a bit of rocker, it'll help with turns and float in softer snow

I'd say that 175cm-180cm is where you want to be. With fatter underfoot you can stand to go a bit shorter. Camber is just like a board so pick accordingly (camber, mixed, or rocker).

Noob progressing to blue runs. I did lessons around the adaptive center and at the end of the day skied down lower fantastic.

How does snowboard sizing compare to ski sizing (if at all)? I run a 161cm board which I'm pretty happy with.

The 180cm lengths seem much longer than what I used that day? The skis went up to my mouth which I figure would be about … 165?

its not just about length because a longer ski will have the right flex to handle your weight of 175lbs for which 180 is not long or hard to turn and is on the short side … you gotta look ahead to the future a little

Ah got it. It makes more sense now why I can't seem to find any skis listed at 165cm. Many more options for the longer skis.

Pretty sure that was 49 inches for poles . . . buy 50 and cut 'em down if you have to . better too long than too short .

they always undersize beginner/intermediates from what I've seen, sure it makes it 'easier' to turn, but you'll outpace it pretty quick. The other thing is that skis with a bit of rocker actually ski shorter than their actually length, so you aren't necessarily giving that much up in terms of maneuverability.

Look under the chick models, women are usually much lighter so the ski sizes will go down to the shorter sizes like 159 or 163 and not get much longer, and they come in pink or leisure suit blue or sft but what is key is the ski flex will be made to work for a 100lb-130lb woman so you would crush them.

At 155lbs my sweetspot is normaly 185ish, I do have some 191's that work because they are a soft/light BC ski but normaly I would never look at a 191

At 175 if you were already a totally ripping ski god you would go [HTML_REMOVED] 190 for sure

Ok 180 seems to be the way to go.

Where should I go shopping for deals? I don't feel like paying comor prices and craigslist is yielding mostly crap (as far as I can tell).

I'm going to check out sports junkies as they have some packages for $299 for boots, bindings and skis, but I suspect that's dependent on what's available.

I'm totally ok buying from the states and have a mailbox.

whistler craigslist can sometimes yield some scores, although they can tend to run slightly fatter, Whistler buy and sell on facebook too can also be good….mec gear swap too

You can ski on anything but not if the feet hurt, the boots are the most important piece of the puzzle
