Holy crap that video is terrifying. If he was going any slower he would have been in it for sure. Hopefully he doesn't think luck/speed will save him next time and gets some education.

I've had nearly 40 great days in the backcountry this year, every one of them has been stellar but the last few times out I've found myself taking bigger risks than I should be taking this time of the year..probably time to hang up the touring gear and spend more time on the bike now that the snow is melting…

you can't buy decision making skills and the mountain don't care how much horse power you have. the good folks at the canadian Avalanche centre are likely loosing sleep over the fact that thier message is missing the mark.

From when I took the AST1, the reason is the amount of terrain that a sled can access is many times higher than can be accessed by human propulsion in the same time.
The other thing is that barrier to entry to human propulsion is that you have to have had some training (even a ski lesson) and likely a few years of experience (even in bounds) before you start heading out.
For a snow machine all you need is a credit card.
I'm guessing the number of skiers/snowshoers that have taken AST1 or greater is a lot higher than snow machine riders.
not to generalize but often the sledders I run into are pissed drunk or well on their way to getting there. Factor in that you're basically riding something that's shaking and vibrating across potentially unstable terrain at high speeds with absolutely no way to hear what the snow is doing under you makes me surprised that there aren't more people getting buried.

not making excuses for dumb sledders but deep pow sledding is way harder to learn than skiing IMO. 1 have about 30 days on a sled and im a newb. its the hardest to learn sport I have ever done.
as for avy safety I think allot of guys get comfortable on slopes they have been on before and disregard conditions.

An old girlfriend of mine works as a nurse at the small hospital in Revy.
Drunk mangled sledders are a common occurance there.
I was in there with a friend who had to get stitches. This guy looked like 20 guys had beat the living crap out of him. Face pulverized and two broken arms. I asked her what bar fight happened? She said, nope, just another drunk sledder crash, helmet not done up. That image will always stick with me, what a mess.
