$175.00 - on there web site, pretty cheap considering vhf radios are 300.00 plus and then you have to buy the mic separately.
2.5 miles they say, on Saturday I was down at the trail head at 8600 feet and Alex was stuck down some gully at least 1000 feet higher…I tried 3 times to get him on the radio and on the 3rd try i could hear him. it was static but I could hear him, I was impressed and so was everyone in the group!
5 times that of a regular 2-way radio that does not work that well in the mtns.

These are basically just FSR with added features to make easier to use. Not a replacement for VHF for times when you really need a VHF.
Just a better built FRS? If that is the case, I would love to get my hands on one since those walmart/best buy FRS craps out most of the time.

I agree with APT id shell out for a higher quality unit.
Seriously do NOT waste your money on these. I had some but returned them because they were pretty much crap. If you want best bang for your buck order a Wouxun dual band radio. They are so much better you can not even compare them. Technically you need a License(which would still be cheaper than the BCA units) but I just make sure I stay off any live channel. they cost 99.00 and you can get a clip on mic for 12.00.

You want a programmable VHF handheld. You can find them on ebay and sometimes kijiji or craigslist. Should run you 100 to 250 bucks.

I have the older version of this radio. Most FSR channels in BC are in the 150-172 mhz range. You just enter the radio freq. Posted at the foot of the road and bob's your uncle. I use them often for work when my truck radio doesn't have the customer work channel.
