I heard something along the lines it cost them roughly the same amount to build the lift access park as it did to build espresso. I could be totally out to lunch, and I am also assuming that statement doesn't factor in the ops, maintenance/trail crew + patrol costs.

So that figure includes adapting the ski lifts to carry bikes and costs to build the trails?

curious if cypress still has the bike trays. i imagine most of the trails are still roughed in (you can see the one at the top still - even covered in snow). shouldn't take toooo much capital to get things rolling again. if, of course, the owners were motivated. they're certainly not making much $$ right now.

As I said, I dont believe the stated figure includes the operating cost + all the other jazz (trail crew, patrol etc).

So I dont know how cost prohibitive it is, but it sounds like you can get a lot of bang for buck.

I hear the costs to run a bike park pale in comparison to running a ski hill. Trail maintenance is a pittance in comparison to snow making and snow cats for grooming plus more patrol for the larger area of skiing, more staff for skiers etc.

I understand that Grouse does well with hiking and walking tourists and they don't want bikers in the mix. Seymour and Cypress are provincial parks too though so perhaps more restrictions?

I agree, I would assume that it would be a fair amount cheaper, even just eliminating the grooming alone.

Based on the olympics leasing dilemma, I bet cypress has dialed in the resort to handle summer traffic (arm waving assumption) and could advance discussions with the gov't on a summer lease. I do not know the procedure and policy around this, so its all arm waving on my behalf.

Local hills are a washout this season so far. We had one good day up at Cypress, but that was last month. Maybe Feb/March will turnout better. Until then, it's bike riding weather.

I was on a school mandated trip to Seymour yesterday, and we were stuck riding the magic carpet on the bunny hill. Lodge has yet to open, and they shut down Mystery for lack of snow.

Stuminator is right, the locals are a washout so far. The upcoming forecast is calling for 9+ degrees in Vancouver for the next week so it's not going to get much better.

ugh: http://www.snow-forecast.com/resorts/Cypress-Mountain/6day/mid

base was minimal on the limited runs that were open this weekend (though enough there for the kids to get their fix); monsoons on fri-sat could wipe the remainder out, however…

good thing for bikes!

I was surprised how little my daughter cared. She has had two ski lessons so far, both in the rain, and still asks every morning if we are skiing today.
