last night hardpack getting harder, lions side nice and fast eagle side less so. Ungroomed = hard bumps. Most other problems could be overcome with speed and determination

yes that is true shame I removed the bike rack of the car this week… there is also touring for touring's sake to do.

Not a bad evening up there. 15ish of windblown cold dry snow on top of a very crusty [HTML_REMOVED] bumpy layer

wow…this almost sounds like it's coming from the Cypress PR department.

What I meant to say was dust on crust.

Just like mixed precipitation means rain, and variable visibility means pea soup, and 0 degrees at the base means rain.

I have e-mailed them to put in a webcam, but they said it'll stop customers from coming up. I guess they figure we'll be able to see rain when they say mixed snow/rain [HTML_REMOVED] fog when they say variable visibility etc.

They used to have a webcam… but ya, the rain drops on it weren't that inspiring!

I used to bring my Nordic skis to the city to night ski during the week. Too many times I would read -1°C on the website only to get up and find +1°C and raining. I refuse to back there because of that.

Debate? Bikes are made for riding not pushing.

It's not a mystery what's happening up there. If you check the Cypress site (which has been known to bend the truth) and then compare it against the Vancouver freezing level (http://www.weather-forecast.com/locations/Vancouver/forecasts/latest) then you can get a pretty good idea of what's happening. The Cypress ski parking lot is at around 1000m so if the freezing level is around 1000m that's good. If the freezing level is significantly higher than 1000m then you can assume that it's probably raining in the parking lot and possibly snowing higher up.

Judging by this I'd say Thursday evening or Friday morning would be good times to go up.

yeah, you have to read they cypress reports a bit critically, but that's part of the charm. usually not too hard to extrapolate conditions in town to what's going on up top. snow forecast is pretty good, too:

I've found that the closer you get to the actual time, the more accurate it is.

If you're looking a week out, it cannot be trusted (but what forecast can)…but within 2 days, it's track record has been pretty good.

Ultimately, it's still a forecast and is susceptible to errors [HTML_REMOVED] changes. But considering the Cypress public forecast is BS, I put more trust in the accuracy of this one.
