CARDIAC, THE RESURRECTION

In the spirit of Easter, we at West Coast Cycling got together and decided that we too should get into the game of bringing stuff back from the dead, so we're bringing the Cardiac Classic back to life. With a brand new course layout and a Marathon format, it should prove nothing short of a revelation. We're putting the 'fun' back in 'funeral': where the old Cardiac was a killer, Cardiac 2.0 is going to be a miraculously good time, with race options to suit everyone, from angelic to evil.

For those who just didn't enjoy the self-flagellation of racing up the steepest trails on Burnaby Mountain repeatedly over the span of a race, we're going to have a short course option. For the rest who still like the taste of blood, you can still enjoy the downright religious experience of grinding up those climbs as many times as you like.

Saturday, July 13th 2013: grass-roots racing returns to Burnaby Mountain. It's going to be biblical.

Tentative course map attached. YES, that is Nicoles and YES if you choose the long course option you'll be pinning it down there on your bike.

West Coast Cycling(Formerly West Coast Racing) are the makers of other fine bike events like the Vanier Park Cross Classic and the West Coast Super D(unfortunately not appearing on the calendar this year)

Stoked to hear its back! Too bad it's the same date as one of the FVMBA races I am involved with. First world problems!

Hey Tom, sorry we are holding it same date as an FVMBA event. Not intended. Originally we were looking in June but couldn't find a suitable date. You would have liked the course changes with more of a marathon format and ripping down Nicoles!!!

Best of luck with your enduro!

The course looks punishing!

Question: how many loops on the marathon course?

Dude: Depending on where we start it may just be a 1 or 2 lap option. If the start is at the skills park we figure fast people will be able to pull off 2 laps in about 2 hours, maybe a bit under. We also think the course is more awesome as it is a bit more up and down. Not just a straight up cardiac and then down. We like that nicoles and mels are in and the new sidewinder trail too.

punishing?? I don't know about you but when I finish any XC race I feel completely worked over. Beautiful thing about our event is that it will probably cost only $25-$35, its local, and we always put on a great show.

tell your friends… tell people who aren't your friends.

forgot to mention that we're planning a short course version aimed at the beginner crowd. The short course will not have nicoles.

Hey, don't get me wrong, I think the course is fantastic! I love the fact that you have included Nicoles, and the climb up sidewinder is a nice change, actually. It's an enjoyable climb.

But, yes…it's punishing…in a good way. The TC climb from the bottom straight into Cadiac is a tough go for pretty much any average joe rider, but it wouldn't be a challenge w/ out that climb to kick things off. For the marathon, I think you need two loops. Otherwise it is just another long ride on Burnaby Mountain…

Nice work, guys!

How many laps for the expert cat? Is it three like the last Cardiac?

Dat two massive climbs in each lap. By the end of the third lap coming down on Nicole's will feel like pure murder.

3 at most for expert based on the longer loops. Probably 2 though! Will keep you posted. We may be starting up top which would cut out the killer climb from the skills park. More to come…

The map appears to show the race taking the gravel path out to the killer climb, and back. Hang your hat/elephant loop would be a nice option in both directions, if the course will have a section on that side of the mountain.

I completely understand the rational behind starting at the Velodrome (re: Parking). It would be nice to score free parking at the lot above GJ.

Looks like we're moving up. We have been in discussion to start at the top of Burnaby Mountain which would elminate the killer climb up from the skills park and avoid the harrowing gravel descent back down.

Still trying to figure out the start so as to space riders out and not make it a complete gong show.

stay tuned…..

plus changing the route so that we do every major trail every lap and the cardiac climb only once per lap

likely to look like:

through the village up top
Nicoles
up new sidewinder climb
across to Gearjammer
Lower Snake
Jim's Jungle to power line
powerline to pumphouse
North Road Trails
"new" Dead Moped (not the extension)
Trans Canada
Cardiac

Registration is live. check out our website http://www.westcoastcycling.ca/cardiac

We think we've got one of the best and toughest XC courses around. More bang for your buck at only $25, lots of options with 1,2 or 3 laps.

Probably would take Neal Kindree just under 2 hours for 3 laps.

Good warm up for the Gearjammer with some fast and technical descents, steep climbs.

hope you can make it. Stop thinking about it and just do it!

Can't race and want to help us, please send an email to info@westcoastcycling.ca

Effen Eh, starting from the top! This is a good tough course. What are the plans for road closures? Flaggers?
