It's going to be an interesting season I think. Strava has gotten fairly popular in the mountain bike scene lately.

Hopefully our trails are respected. I can see people short cutting trails to get faster times.

William "Kim" Flint had been clocked going over 40mph (64km/h) downhill before he braked to avoid a car, causing his bike to flip over.

Goddamn Strava. That would have never happened if it didn't exist. Cycling was never a potentially dangerous activity until that app showed up.

Ride, don't slide.

I don't get the hate on Strava, ignorant people will still be ignorant people and they were around long before this phone app. I use it all the time, I turn it on when I leave the house and turn in off when I get back. It logs my ride and lets me know how I did. I'll bet most people use it the same

not at all, Dave… clearly if you have it on, you're racing recklessly, destroying trails, and terrorizing other trail/road users…2 people in the whole world have died with it on, it's clearly a menace……

I think this year I'm going to buy a 6-pack and hang out at the end of A-line, there's bound to be a few fights that should be entertaining to watch.

I think that is a great Idea. It gives people a chance to still be competitive even if they can not make it out to races.

is going big on a bike the only way to get you stoked on the sport? what happened to riding with your bros, travelling, and riding unique places, to get people stoked on riding?

fines are useless. there needs to be more punches to the throat.

Im a huge fan of Strava. I use it to explore and see new trails or segments in my area. As an XC rider, its a great training tool. Especially with climbing trails. I will admit I have looked at the leader boards of certain segments and used that to determine which trail to go ride in that area. I head out with the intention of crushing the Strava of that trail.

Its not the most accurate. Ive ridden through know segments without it picking up that ride. I don't put a lot of stock in it, it's just fun to see how you stack up against others in your area. And again, a good motivator for XC training.

It can be good. Though I believe you need to be careful crossing which trails to choose as part of the race. Don't want it on anything to busy. Plus I believe each course chosen has a limit on how many days you have to ride it to count.

I have heard that there is a 20 second difference between GPS timing vs old fashioned timing. Personally been using the DRC X Monitor which has been pretty good for self timing on my personal TT.

What if I told you… It is easy as shit changing the times on your GPS file before uploading them to Strava.

I am baffled how few people actually know this. I could KOM every single segment all day long.

And what if I told you, on a good day your GPS might be accurate within 50 meters. That is a difference of being off by 2 seconds or so if your average speed on the trail is a blazing 40 kph (FYI, it is not).

Anyways the point is that with all the GPS location and timing inaccuracies and glaring cheating hole this whole scheme has, why do people still go out there killing themselves trying to beat a trail segment by 5-20 seconds.
