I don't really know much about dslrs, but I want to get one and start making pictures that look cool. I've been playing with a point n shoot for about 1.5 years now and feel that I atleast know if I like a photo vs not liking it.

It seems that the nikon d90 seems like a nice one, and the ability to do 720p video is nice too. I don't know my lenses but I plan on reading up on those. There are some good buying guides on somethingawful. I figure I would start out with a zoom lense and once I learn me some picture takin' then I will grab a few fixed lenses as well.

As far as pricing, it seems like the body is going to run me around $1000 wherever I go, and another $500 for a bag, tripod, basic lense and a storage card. Can anyone offer me buying advice ?

One of these is not like the others.

jokes side, D90 seems pretty dece, personally i'd try to see if I could snag a used d200 or a d80 and get some glass.

You can take 'cool' pictures with any camera. If there's a specific reason you'd like a DSLR, by all means get one.

As others have posted, buy used. Saves you a ton of money. Anything Nikon D200 and newer gives pretty good performance - although I don't know how the low-end models fare. Canon's 20D and newer models all have great performance, although again I'm not familiar enough with the low-end of the range.

It really depends on what you want out of your camera.

Pretty much all you need to get into it.

I wouldn't bother spending under $300 on a tripod, and wouldn't reccomend getting a flash until you've figured out the basics.

what tri-pod are you running? totally agree though…wish I had got a carbon legged one. the 055xb is a beast compared to my old tripod.

your avatar, fucked with my head for far too long.

as for the red, I sure wouldn't call it beautiful, but the image quality is unreal.

They may be expensive in comparison to say, a consumer HD camera, but having said that, most cameras in the six-figure price range don't come close to the Red One's image quality. The retail price of the Red One ($17,500 body only, not sure what it will be after 5K epic and scarlet are released) is insanely inexpensive(in the context of other cameras of it's calibre.) Inexpensive or not…it's not in the budget for me :(

The thing with the DSLRs is that if you arent familiar with the theory behind photography, your photos will tend to be WORSE than they would be with a point and shoot. No matter who I lend my gear to - parents, gf, friends, etc. their photos never turn out well. (I run a 30D with some L-glass).

Personally I'm a Canon guy, always have been and always will be. To each their own though, and good luck!

I'm not

Since the longest I shoot at is 85mm, I haven't found the need for one. That said, I'm going to be getting a Gitzo GT2942 sometime in the new year with some longer glass and hopefully a 1Ds MKII…

yum.

personally I tend to avoid using a tripod, as I like to be able to move around as freely as possible. But definitely has come in handy on occasion.

what are you shooting at the moment, older 1d series body correct?

too much stuff too buy, too little money!
