Red scarlet is nice.
3g's!
But it hasnt been released yet. They say spring but there production and release is so slow. The initial release of the red was almost a year behind schedule.

Also the thing about the 720 P option of the D90 is it only films in mpeg codec. It doesnt even give the option of H264. So if you are trying to do any video shooting with it you will run into quite a few problems when it comes to your posting.

Yeah I was reading on kenrockwell.com about the d90's video capability which seems rather handicapped. I can always borrow an hd cam if I need it anyways. The d40 doesn't seem all that great because of the lack of AF in all the good lenses.

How about the rebel series ? which is best between the xti and xsi ?

One of these is not like the others.

They may be expensive in comparison to say, a consumer HD camera, but having said that, most cameras in the six-figure price range don't come close to the Red One's image quality. The retail price of the Red One ($17,500 body only, not sure what it will be after 5K epic and scarlet are released) is insanely inexpensive(in the context of other cameras of it's calibre.) Inexpensive or not…it's not in the budget for me :(

So I've decided on the rebel xsi. I'm going to get it with the kit lense so that I can have a cheap lense to fart about with to learn the camera. I'm also picking up a book called "understanding exposure" which has been recomended from several sources.

Just a question, what sort of lense would be used in a photo like this: http://www.pinkbike.com/photo/2441504/ ? I wouldn't mind something that gives a BIT of a fisheye look without looking extreme.

The Rebel XSi you are looking at is what is known as a 1.6x crop body. That photo you sent doesnt have an EXIF to show exactly what focal length it was shot at, however, it is likely something in the high teens or low twenties on a full frame in my humble opinion. The kit lens you will receive is an 18-55 which is equivelant to a 28-88mm on a full frame. I think that the kit lens is going to be slightly less wide (and therefore producing slightly less distortion that you comment on). Something like a Canon EF-S 10-22mm is going to be the ticket for those dramatic wide angle distortion shots.

I'd put that couple hundred into lenses myself. Your call though.

Looks like it was shot on a crop body with a pretty wide fish eye… probably somewhere in the 8-15mm range.

Why would you ask for advice but neglect to follow it?

It was my polite way of saying "only a retard would pay more for something used than they can get it for brand new with warranty. "

I'm looking at 30d's now too, but not someones used overpriced one. Can I sell you some used $180 sombrio shorts ?

if you're flip flopping between Rebels and 30D's maybe you should take a step back a bit, because it really sounds like you don't have a clue. That's ok, but when guys like Midas and Nelson give you advice, it's a pretty good idea to listen to it.

That fancy lens you want will probably cost as much as the Rebel, if not more.

James' 30D and 50mm 1.4 lens is a pretty high end starter kit for $840

B[HTML_REMOVED]H has wicked pricing on 30D's right now, I think the best I saw was around $700 for a body with 2g card. Of course that's US and shipping will bring you around $730US or around $900 canadian. Then you need a lens. That 50mm 1.4 will hit you around $300US, but if all you want is that wide angle, count on spending $500-600 for something decent, and you'll still need an every day lens on top of that too. Don't bother with anything less than 2.8 for shooting bikes in the woods, it's just too slow.

James' 30D and lens is sounding pretty good now isn't it?

It should! If I was planning on selling my 30D I would be looking for $800 for the body and another $300 for the 50mm 1.4 lens. Another $700 for my 17-40 F4L and $900 for my 135 for my F2L. This hobby is expensive and lenses particularly hold their value very well.

Canon 15mm Fish? It's pretty sharp in the corners!
