I think NSMB.com should have a photography discussion forum separate from or at least a subsection from the photos [HTML_REMOVED] vids forum where all you guys can discuss technique and equipment, and the rest of us can benefit from your knowledge.

nownow, you're just trying to seperate the geeks from the cool kids aren't you :cow:

I'm with davet, theres a lot of people on here that are smart with photography. Would be great to have a more organized way to read all their words of wisdom, haha.

More like trying to separate the kids that post up every blurry picture they take of their buddies doing the gap on Neds from the truly talented individuals that we can benefit from their knowledge and tips. I was thinking more of an mtb photography discussion forum rather than a pics forum.

I totally agree man, I think that would be a great idea

This is a photography forum - splitting it up and calling it something else won't change it. I hear what you're saying, but…if you want to use this forum to learn about technique and equipment, then post some questions, or ask for feedback, or keep the threads alive that have valuable info for you.

Canon Rebel XT
17-85mm f/4-56 IS
50mm f/1.8
70-200mm f/4
28-70mm f/2.8L (just won it on ebay, don't have it yet, but I'm psyched!)
550 EX
WTB: EF-S 10-22mm, 1.4X tele extender, and a half decent tripod.

If someone's interested in the 17-85, I might let it go. It's versatile, but a bit redundant now with the 28-70 (I wanted something faster) if I also find a 10-22.

BUT, who would shoot at 1/25th for shooting sports?

kind of pointless really.

True. I use the Horizontal IS for panning at anywhere from 1/25 to 1/80 though…

70-200 is a great Portrait lens though as well… Great for sniping lifestyle shots from a bit of a distance or doing studio stuff (If you have a big room).

Anyway, I have one, I like it. I am sure the regular non IS version would be awesome as well.

From all the advice on real sports forums, the IS version was the way to go, so I went that way. I hate buying things that I outgrow and have to sell to buy other things…but I understand the cost aspect as well.

It's a lot of cake but yeah, there is a lot to shoot beyond sports with it, where it could come in handy. IS has been great on my 17-85, for things other than sports…but in general I'll take speed over IS.

ive got IS on my 28-135, the only benefit for the type of shooting i do… is the handheld'ness for when im shooting some street/handheld walkabout photos.

Personally, splitting the forum ups not that bad an idea. Why not have a subsection for just gear questions and help. And keep the main section for showing off your photos?

Because this is a MTB site, not a photography site. If anything, I could see splitting the forum so we have one for photo and one for video, but I wouldn't say there's quite enough video being posted - yet. I'm sure that will change, maybe in a few years video will see the kind of rapid growth that affordable digi SLR's has caused in photography.

And, by the way - we started the gallery so you could show off photos there ;)

I'd be really surprised if anyone can pan a 200mm lens smoothly at 1/25th.

The IR will help in the vertical direction (the single axis where you have IS engaged), but it's not helping at all in the horizontal direction…

I was at B[HTML_REMOVED]H today comparing the 80-200 f2.8 and its expensive 70-200 f2.8 VR brother. I think im going to shell out the $1600 on the VR version…the 70-200 felt more solid. judging by images i see from both lenses, my pick would still be with the 70-200…images are sharper at the larger apertures then the 80-200

The 70-200 VR is definitely bigger and heavier… I am not sure that's such a good thing.
It is slightly sharper wide open, but in test where the user doesn't know which lens you shot with, I'd bet $$$ they can't tell the difference. Heck, when I look at similar images from both lenses, I can't tell.

But what's an extra $700 over two years? A few Starbucks lattes.
You might as well spend the money if you have it.
