http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/loam

a rich, friable soil containing a relatively equal mixture of sand and silt and a somewhat smaller proportion of clay.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loam
Loam is soil composed of sand, silt, and clay in relatively even concentration (about 40-40-20% concentration respectively), considered ideal for gardening and agricultural uses. Loam soils generally contain more nutrients and humus than sandy soils, have better infiltration and drainage than silty soils, and are easier to till than clay soils.

Do I have a misconception about what type of terrain we're all googly eyed about when Lee puts up "the church of loam" type comments, or is loam a buzzword for wicked, amazing, fun, flowy trails?

I don't see any sand, silt or clay on any of the "loamy" trails, except for maybe the Mach Chicken DH course on the SSC.

Discuss…

I think what a lot of people are calling loam these days might better be described as duff, though in that vid I didn't see much duff either. The duff trails are the ones that are still really raw and spongy. That looked pretty smooth and hardpacked.

No matter what it was, it looked good though

Pretty sure 95% of people think of loam as soft and flowy trails that never get boring..

nobody is this dumb.

I describe loam as the forest floor that remains after you scrape away the moss and leaves. What is left is a nice mixture of rotten bark, bugs, the odd pebble… stuff that doesn't hurt too badly when you wash out on it.

Great vid, although the transition from the log drop on "4 Dead" to the ferns on "Logging Railroad" was a bit like that scene in "Lethal Weapon" where Danny Glover takes the left turn under BC Place and ends up at the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal.

f I wasn't so busy house building, I woulda prolly run into you guys.

I learned the hard way to towel off my bike before the dog. I'd rather have a slightly oily dog than a hairy bike.

Beautiful west coast, ocean inspired pottery.
