i remember those days. my first dh was on blackcomb (in '89 i believe). from the roundhouse to the base, mostly on the access road. on a hardtail w/ the then new 2" rockshox rs-1 (serious dh gear), and cantis. protective gear consisted of full lycra [HTML_REMOVED] foam xc lid. i remember spinning out my 48t ring a few times. epic. needless to say, there was carnage. we were hard back in the day…
That was probably the Can AM Challenge? 1990 - was it the one with Cindy Devine and Greg Herbold? Hill climb in the morning and down in the afternoon - I was fully rigid on my Cannondale - I honestly felt my arms go to butter from the vibrations! Good times!

indeed! i did the hillclimb as well (on the same bike of course). think my time up was just over an hour, time down was an epic 10-15ish (memory lapses). i recall getting passed by devine on the climb about half way up. fast girl.
my god… two decades ago…
haha not gonna lie these guys seem way more gnarly then some of the downhillers today haha
Possibly, but the speeds in downhill nowadays are much higher over much rougher terrain. You watch some of the World Cup guys go down and they don't spring right back up like those dudes do.
Biking: As addictive as cocaine, twice as expensive!

the berm was a great invention:)
Also, some people like skinnies. What better way to teach rear-wheel awareness - of which there is precious little around here? Besides, give it 5 years, and theyll be retro-chic again.
I can see why pink is making a comeback… that was awesomely awesome. Thanks for the lol of the day.
the guy at just after 4 mins is awesome

Both generations push/ed the limits of the available technology. Which would be the most sketchy, riding Goats Gully on a DH bike, or the Bear Cub bypass on a fully rigid bike (which was typical DH terrain back in the day)? Having raced DH on a rigid bike (with the obligatory Uphill and Trials on the Saturday….), I can safely say that it can scare the shit out of you just like any Garbo run on a big beik.
Anyway, Awesome video! Brings back many clothing memories. Bula hats for goalposts etc….
treezz
wow you are a ass
last 2 crashes were awesome. so sketch
I bassically fell out of my chair when I saw the the guys tumble down the stair section, I felt bad for laughing so hard but I was just amazed after smashing into fences and sliding on pavement, endo after endo they just got up like it was no big deal…. Now those boys are the real deal….Thanks Cam you made my night..
..at a time before quick release seatposts have been invented.

anyone around back in '86-'87 (?year of the van world expo thing?) for the stage race at whistler that did the same uphill then downhill race and the next day was xc around lost lake? I think they called it something like a nor-am/can-am race.
I'd love to see the results or any other historical stuff from that race. It was my first whistler experience.
I've got one classic photo of myself from an early 90's DH race.

Ahhh yes…full ridgid downhilling. It's what I used to do daily.
All but one of those guys sucked
