I put together a quick blog post with some shots that didn't make it into my Deep Summer slideshow a couple of weeks ago, figured people might be interested:

Sorry it's not the "good" ones, nor is there any sign of the slideshow itself, but I'm working on making both public as soon as possible!

Nice roadkill. Did the blueberries bring out the flavour?

I'd never had wild blueberries before that weekend, and couldn't believe how good they tasted!

All wild berries are awesome. Silverstar bike park has an added bonus that it's covered in Wild Strawberry, so good. Wild raspbery is awesome too.

Those are Berries, and they are Blue, but they are not Blueberries.

Some refer to them as Blue HuckleBerries, but they are also called Cascade bilberry or Cascade huckleberry.

Locally, Huckleberries are usually found as a Red berries. The Blue ones are slightly larger, seem to grow on top of the leaves instead of hanging below and have a slightly more tart taste.

I rode Sumas on Sunday and had a very nice lunch of Red and Blue Huckleberries about 10 minutes from the top.

Thanks - I think that pretty much reinforces the fact i shouldn't be eating random berries in the bush

wiki…

While some Vaccinium species, such as the Red Huckleberry, are always called huckleberries, other species may be called blueberries or huckleberries depending upon local custom. Usually, the distinction between them is that blueberries have numerous tiny seeds, while huckleberries have 10 larger seeds (making them more difficult to eat).

So Dan, 10 larger seeds?

my vote is they were blueberries. I found some too.

The leaves are all wrong to be huckleberries.

Ah well, it seems to me the problem is the same issue I see with Trail names up on Ledgeview. One group call it one thing, another group call it something else.

Problem is - Huckleberry and Blue berry are common names, and not their scientific names. People call the plants and berries whatever seems appropriate at the time.

Look a bit deeper, I saw stacks of different-appearing plants all called HuckleBerries, and Cascase Bilbeeries and Bkueberries.
Part of it to me I suppose is taste. I've been eating red Huckleberries (or, should I say I've been eating the berry known to me as HuckleBerries) for close to 40 years, and these Blue ones look amazingly similar and are almost indistinguishable in taste.
Whe I go to the store and buy Blueberries - they taste completely different - they are harder and larger.

So - those berries….. Huckleberries? I don't know, but that's what I'm referring to them as, but they are Not Bueberries like the Blueberries you see in the stores.

And, yes… Those berries in Dan's photos are my favorite wield berry, so they are dear to me too ;)
