Every year I need to do a trip to California. This year I was lucky enough to go during UBC's reading break and I also headed down as soon as exams were over.

This year it was with my good friends Ben and Cam Porteous. We drove 26 hours straight and found ourselves in San Diego. We rode in and around San Diego including Ted Williams, Pine Valley, Laguna Beach and Iddylwild. We then headed to Santa Cruz to ride the infamous Post Office dirtjumps and the UCSC downhill trails. We ended the trip in Falls City, Oregon where we rode two days at Blackrock.

wtf is with "lucky enough" - has easily replaced "moving forward" as my least favorite, meaningless phrase that seems to come out of everyone's mouth. what if you had been insufficiently lucky - would you have missed reading week, not have gone, remembered you should have been writing an exam while driving through olympia? /end rant

Love California. But…you drove right past some great DH! Tunnel trail in Santa Barbara for example is 4000 vertical feet of steep rocky singletrack. Deadly exposure, beautiful ocean views, big sharp rocks. 5.5 miles of arm pump, with another 2 miles of fast twist road through the estates eventually dropping you right on State Street 'the strip'. There are 3-4 front side trails that drop you right into town from about 4500 vertical, all accessed by a paved road…which incidentally is one of THE climbs to do if you are a roadie. You got to ride these trails before their gone. Old shool awesomeness! San Luis Obispo has some super gnar DH trails as well, but you will have to ask around to get to those. the SB trails are still on a map, but if you can hook up with locals, more fun:-)
