Nope. It's driven from the brake side of the rear wheel. There is a transfer shaft running up the seatstay, through the toptube, through the custom headtube/headset and to the front wheel. It's all pedal-power!

Good for XC, whoever said it's useless is just talking out their ass. I don't think it'd help too much for downhill though.

Nope, not good for downhill at all, the front drive is effected by the front brake severely (according to both mags in which versions were tested) Apparently the front brake pulls the wheel to the side whenever the drive is engaged, no matter whether your going up or down.
