It's a ship when you say it's a ship.

by that logic my 10' zodiac is a ship.

ummm I never really focused my attention on the definition of a boat and ship in school…..but the old saying I posted is likely close enough for any normal person needs.

Boats go around the lake or out to some buoy in the ocean. Ships go across the ocean.

Sail boats go across the ocean.

Boats are open hull or if covered, have only one deck. Ships have one or more decks.

This is the best answer IMO.

Let's not even get into the reasons why Submariners (even those on the largest ballistic missile subs) always call their vessel a "boat", never a "ship".

If a ship is carrying a boat, will the boat take off?

Way back from the old school days of NSMB…

Tugs are called boats and have multiple decks.
