As despicable as they are, I think the Westboro 'Baptists' serve two very valuable purposes.
1) They unite veteran's families (and the general public) and homosexuals against a common hated enemy and expose the sort of sentiments that gays have to deal with on a regular basis.
2) They provide a great example of fundamentalism and zealotry taken to it's natural end to those who are already on the slippery slope of US religion/politics. Westboro can be seen as a warning, how many people heed this warning isn't known.
These positives, however, don't come anywhere close to doing the same amount of good as would be done if they just vanished off the face of the earth.
