banks charge the bar/pub/restaurant etc a fee for every debit transaction they process, it used to be around $.25 a transaction, that severely can cut into profit over time
cash is king

My opinion is that carrying [HTML_REMOVED]500$ cash around with you is not that big of a deal unless you're a moron or in Rio after dark.
Prolly more likely to get hit by a plane falling from the sky than mugged western canada.
Pffft.
I walk around with at least $600.
you are nothing if you can't pay cash for bottle service
Would be a good point except this is not a small pub, its part of a chain of like 6 Irish pubs in Calgary. I never said it was small or slow.
…
Would this be "Calgary's Best Pubs"?
Kilkenny, Donnegals, Limericks, etc. ?
If so, screw the jerks. I hate the service. I hate the food. I hate how they halved their beer selection. I hate how half their beer tastes funny.
Long-short: I've stopped going, and urge all of my friends to do the same.

unless you're a 2-3 transaction/ day place there's no reason not to take debit. The fucking kids live on debit, so if you don't want their money…do so @ your own peril. Maybe the bar in the IP owns the bank machines and figures drunk peeps will glady go and pay the s/c for cash to settle up?
holy, tough crowd.
i'm with the ham on this one - a pub is part of the service industry. in order to provide good service they should take all available types of payment, including debit.
The Olympics only too cash and visa.
The Olympics only too cash and visa.
well they were sponsored by visa. and IMO it was extremely annoying. i waited in a huge lineup at the bay to purchase olympic gear, only to be told when i got to the till of the payment options. luckily i had cash (i usually carry very little with me).
It's not a bad idea to check what type of payment a vendor takes BEFORE making a purchase.

another great point that has nothing to do with the thread.

It will be more polite if I don't give you my opinion of that.

that would be them, I won't be going back for sure!

exactly, I am not asking night clubs to accept debit, a pub that serves food has no reason not to accept debit. if .25 cents here and there is eating into your profit that much your doing something wrong.

it was in the bay. which takes all forms of payment. thanks for the suggestion though.
I'm under the impression that as a retailer, taking M/C, Visa [HTML_REMOVED] Debit started off as a sales strategy. Most companies still advertise near their entrance which cards they take. I guess this has lost it's upper hand since 95% of places take all cards nowadays.
I hate how some bars, and more often clubs, can abuse their customers with paying surcharges for taking out money, line-ups to get in, ridiculous markup on booze, etc and people are still dying to go back there. The general public confuses the hell out of me with the things they spend so much hard earned $$ on.
the lineup is probably because the place is full and so if the fire inspecter drops in they at least get hassled ,possible fined and maybe shut down
everybody wants to go there … because everybody wants to go there
the wise business owner is taking advantage of you wanting that convenience to make more money from you …but unwise you just keeps complaining instead of preparing themselves
you want convenience but you don't want to pay for it
the bottle service crack is a faithless dig cuz ANY thread is a thread where we can make fun of faithless

pretty sure at the start of the thread I said I am preparing myself. I am going to phone ahead now, if they don't take debit I will not go. I don't want to pay for a convience that most places don't charge for, if they charged a quarter to use the can I likewise would not give them my business.
