It's all about the extra $3 or so they make per transaction. If you do direct debt, they pay a service charge, if you use their ATM they get a cut of the service charges.

I was in a bar in Vegas last week and I'm really glad I ran out of cash early in the evening so I wasn't too drunk when I read the screen when the ATM told me it would charge an additional $30 fee for the transaction.

$30!!!!

I thought $2 was bad.

Yikes.

It's worse than casino ATMs only spitting out money in multiples of $50.

Pubs take debit. Clubs/Bars take cash and sometimes Visa tabs. I thought this was common knowledge.

Really? is an Irish pub a club or a bar because both of these places were Irish pubs. The last time I subjected myself to going out to a club here in Calgary they took debit.

Thanks for that bit of common knowledge though.

A lot of places don't take debit for amounts under 5$, could it be tied to that?

P.s. how much does an average beer cost in a bar out west?

I'm with you Ham. What's the mark up on frickin drinks? I am sure they can make a profit on 8$ beers without forcing me to use there instacash machine in the corner, so I think boycotting the place when you have choices is the way to go. While we are on the subject, I also hate how those machines wait until the transaction is just about finished before telling you about the service charge, like it almost forgot.

it was for a jug of beer, appetizers and meals for me and my wife so that can't be it either. When I go out I expect to pay anywhere from 6 to 9 dollars a pint depending on where I am and what I am drinking.

I should clarify, If I was out drinking at a bar that didn't serve food I wouldn't be put off that they don't take debit. even more so if it is standing room only. it's like safety said its all about the money they make off their ATM. That's what pissed me off, we went out because it was cheap appetizer day but the price of paying them almost offset the money I saved on appetizers.

My wife thinks I should write them a letter but I am not willing to make myself feel that old just yet:lol:

I think the RDR the business gets from the banks they deal with can take either a visa or a debit card

I know my BNS debit [HTML_REMOVED] visa cards look very similar and I get them mixed up ,I use visa instead of debit but I don't realize I got the wrong card it till the RDR is asking which account I want to spend the money from

You should have enough brains and will power to own a visa card and not be afraid of it cuz there are things you need the credit for …like it shows you have enough credit to rent a car

Hmmmm, in a food [HTML_REMOVED] sit-down kind of place I agree that's kind of odd.

It's not a question of brains and will power. I am not going to use it so why would I want to pay the fees to have one? I haven't been in a situation where I needed a card and couldn't get around it, I don't drive so renting a car is a moot point. my credit rating was good enough I was able to get a mortgage on a house. I had the brains and will power to get a bank loan on large purchases (bike) when I was younger and just pay it off right away.

I am pretty sure they can as well. I know for a fact that the CC company charges companies a heck of a lot more to accept their cards then banks charge to use debit.

I don't pay any fees on a basic BNS visa card and they will pay me a % of cashback once a yr to the tune of 100$ so far this fiscal yr

still I use a lot of cash ,the visa is just another tool in the wallet

I seem to spend less money on small shit that adds up when I only pay cash

Yep, they make a cut on in-club ATMs.

Plus those independent Kiosk ATMS are perfect for pin-skimming.
If I'm ever stuck using one of those things I make sure to change my PIN soon after.

Mini rant,

At a pub a few months ago, go up to the bar order a pitcher and some food for my table. Go to pay with my Mastercard and convo goes something like this.

Her: "We don't take Mastercard, only Visa"
Me: "Can I pay with debit?"
Her: "No, but you can use our atm to get cash"
I stare blankly for a few seconds, deciding what to do. (I don't need the beer or the food that badly, and am pretty much ready to walk away)
Other server at the bar "Actually we do take Mastercard"

Bandits I tell you!
