We have a pretty good understanding of space and time? We don't even know what gravity is. We understand a lot of the math, but nobody knows what it is. Same with dark matter and dark energy. We assume they exist because our math doesn't explain what we can see. I think it might be a bit premature to think we have this physics thing nailed.
We've known what gravity is since Einstein's theory of general relativity and that knowledge is used all the time. The math is just a description of it's effects.
The confusion for most is that they believe gravity to be one of four fundamental forces along with weak nuclear, strong nuclear, and electromagnetism. The latter the have gauge bosons (gluons, W/Z bosons, photos) that are their force carriers, and most believe that gravity has a force carrier called the graviton. This is not the case as gravity is curvature of spacetime and use not meditated by a force carrier.
As for the time/space, Einstein's theory of special relativity explains it and, with general relativity, has been thoroughly and successfully tested/verified for a hundred years.
Dark matter and energy - just more on the things of the lists to be explained.
The confusion for most what? :) Is "physicists" the word you are looking for? Did you just declare the death of string theory? Did you let Sheldon Cooper down easy when you told him? ;)
The fact that actual physicists are still debating the basic mechanism of gravity should give you pause enough to realize we still have a lot to learn about the forces of the universe. Einstein himself died trying to unify physics. Dark energy can curve space time as well and we know even less about that. Basically all we can see is 4% of the universe and we have just invented "stuff" for the other 96% that we assume must exist because our observation of an expanding universe doesn't make sense otherwise. Now there is a "crisis in cosmology" because the JWST keeps finding shit it shouldn't and now the age of the universe is in question.

But isn't a big part of the spirit of this thread to throw the doors open and consider the unknown? I see this as a thought exercise, not necessarily a discussion rooted in the mechanics of the universe as we currently understand it.
If it's not rooted in the known, or the evidence based, then the thought experiment is Science Fiction. It's a great genre.
Couldn't it be a hypothesis? Relativity started as a thought experiment that was neither known or proven.
In as much as “Its witches riding Unicorns” is a hypothesis.
You can’t disprove a negative, but there is no real evidence for proving Aliens with FTL capabilities. So no, at this point with no actual evidence of space-time being folded is “it’s aliens” a real hypothesis.
Jesus Couch. I will send you a cookie in the mail if you can find a single post in this thread where anyone made the claim "it's aliens". The hypothesis you somehow missed was "FTL travel could be possible". Here is one such hypothesis on wrap drives. If you have any to share on Unicorn Riding Witches I would love to check it out.

String theory is for getting research grants for those that can't do useful research.
GR is the most well proven theory in history. There have been claims of issues with it because of singularities at boundary conditions of the equations, but whether they are valid claims is unknown. It's pretty hard to some measurements at the center of a black hole.
Einstein didn't know about the strong or weak nuclear forces, so there wasn't much unifying for him to do. He an optimist who believed the workings of the universe could be understood completely.
It is dark matter appears to curve spacetime. Dark energy is responsible for the acceleration in the expansion of space - it's the cosmological constant in the GR equation.
As for JWST, it's causing scientists to rethink their ideas about the early universe with the data it is proving. With more and better data (which is what the device was designed to provide), speculation will hopefully give way to something more concrete.
wrap drives, eh?
I did miss what FTL stands for though...

I actually think you might be right about string theory, but I will let the physicists decide when it's dead. Whether it is general relativity or quantum field theory, they are just models to explain what we observe. It is math, not reality. We know what gravity does, but we do not know what gravity is. If we did, physicists would agree.

If that's even half as factual and well reasoned as this was, then it should give the internet conspiracy monkeys a big ol hard on.
