MMA, hunting lacrosse, etc. I'm sure have their own problems that are equal or maybe even greater than the issues in hockey. I just find it sickening how some people get so wrapped up in the competition of the game that it no longer becomes enjoyable, ie. fights, bench brawls, shouting matches, and just general uncivilized behaviour. If you looked back at early hockey, it is apparent that the level of skill was certainly lower, but the players were a lot more civilized and didn't jump at every opportunity to body-check, punch, slash, or fight their opponent.
I'm sure I could keep on ranting, but I think my point is clear, so I'll leave it at that for now.
You dumbass. Stick fights used to be common. Bench clearing brawls used to be common. When players fought, and one guy went to the ice, it used to be commonplace for the other guy to pin him to the ice and beat the shit out of him. The first ever organized indoor hockey game ended with a fight between players and spectators.
The game right now is more civilized than it has ever been.
