There is no one on this side of the Atlantic who thinks the USSR was justified in invading Afghanistan.

Of course not, they're all inculcates of a coroprate media, owned by the friendly people who make the bombs who've trained them to think war is peace. The reality of that tragedy is rather the fault of the rubes "on this side of the Atlantic".

We get it.  You are a communist, but holy shit.  How did this moron manage to write an article implying that the USSR ran a humanitarian mission in Afghanistan?  It was a proxy war to be sure, but up to 2 million people were killed and the Soviets did a shitload of that killing.  Was it OK because the enemy was CIA backed?  The PDPA were hardly saints like he wants to portray either.  They killed thousands after the coup.

But that is OK with you if it supports the communist cause?  You have some seriously weird convictions.

You can wrongheadedly infer that if you want, but it's a bit hypocritical given that your people came up with R2P.

Make no mistake, the Soviets went into Afghan to make war. At the behest of the legitimate govt. Unlike the US who invaded and caused untold deaths simply because they wanted a prescence where they wanted a pipeline. Oh and a few military bases to surround the evil doer Russkies. Hegemony, eh?

You replied to someone saying the USSR was not justified to in invading by blaming the tragedy on Amerika... again.  How else should that have been inferred?  The USSR was happy to fight on behalf of communism.  The article you posted made it sound like the communists in Afghanistan were doing nothing but good for the people but they killing thousands of people and were very unpopular in much of the country since they are hard core Muslims and didn't want social reform.  The USSR was certainly the main villain in that story.

I'll re-cap for you; the psychotic yanke scum formented an uprising amoungst the theocratic fascists of the land against a legal, secular govt. and at that govts. request the Soviets intervened. Much to the delight of Dr. Evil, Zbigniew Brzezinski.

And who didn't want "social reform"? Land owning theocratic fascists who loved their absolute power of life and death didn't want reforms but what about the peasent classes, women and such who where the driving force behind Taraki and the PDP. They're just chopped liver to Russiaphobes like you.

In 1978 the PDPA overthrew the secular government that they once supported and helped bring to power in 1973. They killed the president (who was wary of getting too cozy with the USSR) and his family in the Saur Revolution (it was a coup). Taraki consolidated power and the people against his reforms were the highly traditional Muslim peasants in the rural areas. It is the same today and that is where the Taliban mainly exists. I am not saying the reforms were not needed, but the US was not required to foment anything, they just saw an opportunity to support the enemy of the enemy. It was fuckery all around, but the problem already existed within Afghanistan and probably always will.

Read a fucking book. The US aided the hard core Muslims in the countryside which morphed into the Taliban. They are hardly wealthy power brokers. The are religious extremists of mainly poor rural farmers, and the PDPA's secular ideals did not match theirs (which are and were 100% awful). When Karaki changed the flag to an almost exact replica of the USSR they lost their shit. Those pics of women hanging out and enjoying freedom in the late 70's are all from Kabul where the PDPA had support, but the majority of the people were in the rural areas living under strict Sharia law.

Life is far more complicated that Amerika Bad.

► Trump continues to threaten to pull out of NATO, which is so catastrophically stupid, that it would be like the only guy in a prison yard with a shotgun just throwing it over the fence for absolutely no reason

Sure wish he'd followed through. https://www.commondreams.org/views/2021/02/23/what-planet-nato-living

Warlording factions vying for power had the connections for arms and money that fueled the fighting. Read a book yourself.

Illegal invasions of Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq;

The broken agreement over NATO expansion into Eastern Europe;

U.S. withdrawals from important arms control treaties;

More than 300,000 bombs and missiles dropped on other countries by the United States and its allies since 2001;

U.S. proxy wars in Libya and Syria, which plunged both countries into chaos, revived Al Qaeda and spawned the Islamic State;

U.S. management of the 2014 coup in Ukraine, which led to economic collapse, Russian annexation of Crimea and civil war in Eastern Ukraine; and

The stark reality of the United States’ record as a serial aggressor whose offensive war machine dwarfs Russia’s defense spending by 11 to 1 and China’s by 2.8 to 1, even without counting other NATO countries’ military spending.

USSR went into Afghanistan because of 1) oil and 2) religious fanaticism.

I have read plenty of books.  That is how I knew you were wrong.  The PDPA took control in a coup that was not supported by the people of Afghanistan from an already secular government without America.  Their tank commander warned the president of an impending attack and surrounded the capital, but it turned out he was the one behind it and they turned their guns on the palace.  They did so with Soviet tanks and aircraft so think what you want, but those are the facts.  When the palace was surrounded and they demanded that president Daoud surrender he came out firing a pistol and was gunned down like Scarface.  Badass.

That is what set the scene for what would soon become a proxy war, so I am not sure what books you are reading.
