"The essential American soul is hard, isolate, stoic, and a killer".
One quote claims America is a killer, the other that America was a killer, but it is erased in mythology and replaced with "illusions of... the essential goodness of people". Other than they are both taking a swipe at America, they are not saying the same thing.
