Do you use it? I have had good luck with the places, but what say you NSMB traveling guru's.
Trip Advisor
What is taht? We book trips with The local travel agent which costs the same as doing it on-line and he saves us money
It is a user review site for travel hotels and services. I has links to the online travel agents but I use it mainly to see what kind of hotel my company books me in to when I travel, and it seems that some hotels read all of the reviews and make responses to the comments( good or bad)
So far, so good with Trip Advisor. I thought Yelp was going to take off, but it didn't.
The apps are handy as they download all the content for when you're out of country.
I use it all the time to check out restaurants and hotels. Was super helpful in planning our trip to the Galapagos. Found a hotel in Quito, Puerto Ayora and Villamil through Trip advisor.
Some of the reviews are all over the place, so you need to figure out the trend, mostly good, or mostly bad.
Some negatives are more subjective or people complained it was really loud when the hotel they chose was on a busy street, duh.
I was also using Yelp, but agree it hasn't taken off it.

I used it to find several of the hotels I stayed at when I went to India in October. They were all top notch as the reviews said they would be. Reviews can only tell you so much though. Two of the hotels I stayed at were India business hotel ie it was me and a bunch of local business men. No biggy but something to keep in mind.
Another one for using it for hotel reviews, it also allows you to check availability and price on the various room levels. I'll use it again.
Having been in the tourist industry for a while (tour boats, hotels etc) trip adviser is
spot on. As Sharon said, look at trends and read into what the complaint is really about.
Also, look at other posts by negative and positive commenter's. The positives can come from
friends (I know one B[HTML_REMOVED]B here that does that all the time). And negatives can come from competition too.
See if they like everything or hate everything in other comments about other things.
I found yelp to be lacking in users and don't really use it, although it's pretty good for
finding a restaurant sometimes.
Also, high rankings don't mean too much if all the high marks came from 2 years ago, and
it's taking the law of averages to catch up to them, so look at the past year vs a few
years ago to see if they've turned to shit or improved.
Travel agents can get you good deals, and since they want repeat customers, they probably
won't steer you "wrong", but they may not find the right place because that place doesn't
do commissions. So while you may stay in a "nice" hotel and eat at "nice" restaurants, you
may not find that gem of a hotel in that out of the way place with real local food really
cheap where very few people are.

I use it for checking out hotels all the time. So far any of the highly rated hotels I've stayed at have been as good as they say. Just ignore the worst and best reviews and see what the majority say.
Haven't had as good luck with their restaurant reviews though, I guess when it comes to food people have very different standards of what they consider really good.
