Under or around $3000 is the goal. A KDX might work but it will need lowering.

What is the consensus on a 250f vs KDX220 for lugging around?

I do think a small trials bike is probably the way to go but he does want a proper seat.

I would think a ttr 230 is probably the way to go.

Also certain trials bikes have seat options. Scorpa comes to mind, as well as the beta long range tank/seat.

Thing about a ttr or crf 230 is what ever you pay(well as long as you didn't get ripped off) for it, you can likely sell when you're done with it. The wife bought a crf150f, rode it for 2 seasons and sold it with $100 of what she paid.

Maintenance is dead simple with those bikes due to the fact that there is none.

If the person decides at any point down the road they want a nicer bike or they are not interested in the sport the losses will be next to nothing.

A 250f is pretty high on the maintenance and if it blows up, well it will likely only be worth parts after the fact.

Having said that, my 250f has been awesome.

Msr bottles in the backpack, super long rides I take a bigger pack and a 1 gallon Jerry can.

Thanks for the input guys.

Checking out reviews, the TTR actually sounds like it might be a good little trail bike. It comes geared pretty low so that is a bonus.

We'll take a look at one and see what he thinks.

TTR-230's a great little trail bike, except for the ground clearance. Rides like a tractor (which is good if your'e not a speed demon).

I am working I north van right now, but I can be at eagle around 4:30 if anyone wants to go for an afternoon rip this week.

I am not allowed to take time off work for awhile, so sadly I will not be riding with Rat on thurs.
