what a waste of money. The cameras they use are generally d2x's or pro bodies that are sealed. these cameras with said sealed lenses probably cost 5-6 grand each.

How much does a single accident caused by someone who runs a red light cost? If these cameras prevent people from running reds based on fear of getting ticketed, and thereby prevents even ONE accident, that camera, and a few others, are paid for.

Ok, I'll take this.
No one "intentionally" runs a red light is true, but most of us see the yellow and
gun it not stop. By gunning it you risk the light turning red, having someone step
off the sidewalk without looking and such. Also, when you do that you are increasing
your speed which makes it harder to stop than if you were maintaining your speed.
When people see the camera box and think it's "live" they are more prone to
not gun it and slow to a stop instead. This minimizes risk and also increases the
time of transition between one turning red and the other turning green.

The other morning I was driving along Hastings at 5 am on a Saturday and every light seemed to go yellow as I approached it. As I got to Willingdon and Hastings I said fuck it and floored it as the light went yellow. I think I entered the intersection before it went from yellow to red. As I drove through I saw two bright flashes of light. I have not received a ticket yet so I don't know if I am for sure getting a ticket.
This was back on the 10th of this month.
I got pulled over in north van going through an advance green when it was yellow. Mountain bike, young guy, so the cop pulled me over and gave me the yellow light ticket speech about how I could be fined over 100 dollars for it. I had never heard of a yellow light ticket. I have a feeling its a bit of a grey area.
