Toyota Pickup Truck Transmission Work Near Scienceworld?

Greetings old chaps,

Our '92 V6 RWD pickup is having issues….For a while reverse grinds when trying to engage, but now it's really hard to get the vehicle into 1st and 2nd (no grinding though). The clutch appears to work fine in that it is strong, but the bite point is practically in the carpet, and being hydraulic, can't be adjusted (according to the Haynes manual anyway….).

Any suggestions on a trustworthy independent place not too far from Main and 2nd? I've tried Gords for another job on the Suby I had and they were really helpful (advised me to ditch the vehicle rather than them take money repairing it, and didn't charge me anything) so I don't have an issue trying them again, but if there is a trustworthy specialist in the area, I'd give them a go.

I would check out Main Street Automotive. Bill the owner is a straight shooter. Had them replace the clutch on my Xterra last year.

^Just had some work done there on my Tacoma. Seem like good people. Will go back again.

I replaced a clutch on my 91 pickup because i couldn't get it in gear with out grinding or jamming it into gear. After replacing the clutch plus my master and slave cylinders with no luck i found out that the culprit was a huge split in the clutch/brake pedal assembly. It caused the pedal to twist instead of compressing the master cylinder. Before you pay anyone to have a look at it, stick your head under the dash and have a look for a crack in the upper left corner of the pedal assembly. The 89-95 toyotas are notorious for this problem. I went through 2 assemblies before i found a solid fix.

My good buddy works at main street auto, definitely good service there. Unfortunately shop rates are kinda high.

Thanks guys. And thanks for the tip Stubz. I'll have a look under the dash next time I'm at the truck. The clutch pedal certainly sounds a bit creaky for some reason.

Even though I'm out in suburbia I still travel back to the middle of Vancouver to get Bill and his guys to look after my vehicles that are out of warranty.

What shape is the truck in? If a rusty beater or real high mileage may not be worth a rebuild.
Prolly looking at a 1500-2000 rebuild at least. Cheaper if you can pull and re install. (fairly simple in those trucks)
Usually best to do the clutch and slave as well if you are going that far. (300 - 500)
Best bet would be to find a wrecker tranny I would think.

To check for a busted pedal try and move it side to side, but if its making creaking or cracking sounds when you depress it its probably broken.

Also if this problem just came up, check the line running from the master cylinder to the slave cylinder before you replace any parts. It could be cracked. From there check those two parts for leakage. If I remember right there is a threaded rod at the slave cylinder/clutch fork for adjustment, and obviously the free play adjustment at the pedal.

Thanks guys. I've just checked the pedal and clutch fluids and all is good there. Only the slightest surface rust on the pedals surrounds. The one thing that is weird and re-enforces an annoying part of driving the truck, is the deep imprints in the carpet from having to press the clutch pedal so far down. We had to remove the rubber mat as you couldn't change gear with it behind the clutch pedal. That doesn't seem right to me and the bite point has never been so far down in any other vehicle I've ever driven.

Worn clutch and/or freeplay out of adjustment. On a truck that old, probably both.

have you tried tapping a different gear syncro before shifter gears?

in my truck i tap 1st before i shift into 2nd and its smooth.
