trust me most of them are wannabees in RC
Haha true. Growing up in Sechelt I learned fast that RC was full of doctors, lawyers, and teachers that were trying to be hippies. And then there were the few real freaks that lived in the bush that really were hippies.
I'd have more respect for thier "cause" if they were actually protesting something that mattered to the state or the world like the war in Iraq, or China's occupation of Tibet.
hmm kind of ironic that the Goddess of Democracy statue is a stone's throw away from the knoll.
Actually the point of fail was when one of them interfered with the fire crews. That was the turning point and it went from there.
That was exactly it. The whole thing was going on all day without a hitch, bands were playing and stuff, not a cop in sight. Then they start the fire, so of course the police and fire department show up to put it out. Some girl stands in front of the hose, so she gets arrested. She's in the back of a car, and then the protesters surround the car and are warned multiple times to move or they will be arrested. They refuse to yield. In comes the calvary.
At any rate, the thing that gets me that this protest didn't have to and shouldn't have gone the way it did.
Buy my damn bike.
Here's another video, and after repeated viewings, it is evident that what these students need is a lesson in PR and effective protest management, in conjunction with the police using their judgement and discretion and lightening up a bit. Both sides handled this one badly, but the onus is on the state and it's agents, in this case the police, to manage the situation and keep the moral high ground. That shouldn't be hard to school a bunch of undergrads, now should it?
It would appear that both sides lacked senior command direction at the scene.

I didn't know that one could take a courses at UBC to earn a Bachelor's in Protest Management.
But seriously, in the last few years of police response to protests that was a pretty tame response. No pepper spray was used, no Tasers, and no batons. Hell, the riot crew wasn't even called in.
Considering what could have been done by the cops I'd say they reacted well. They quietly without fanfare arrested individuals when they could have instead dealt with the situation with Pepper spray and TASER's.
What there is is a bunch of bored, spoiled kids mouthing off over a pile of dirt they hang out on.
Are you talking about Fromme?

I was personally quite disappointed that the riot squad wasn't called in. ;)

If the protest is lawful there should be NO police response! The amount of resources that went in to quelling a bunch of student protestors and a bonfire is ridiculous.
Should we be "grateful" that the riot crew wasn't called in? There was no riot. Should we be "appreciative" that there were no Tasers, batons and spray? Thanking the state for not using force on it's citizens?
WE CANNOT FORGET that the authorities work for us, based on a covenant and permission granted by us to enforce laws that our elected representatives and judicial bodies have drafted. That's how it is supposed to work. We live in a free country with a free exchange of ideas. The police, and especially the VPD, are creating a culture of fear and submission in the populace such that we won't protest ANYTHING at all. Just take it and like it.
The laws of the land work both ways.

i agree with most, but fire is serious. you can't have a "bonfire" at a university and not expect police and fire to show up. and if you try to block fire crews from putting out the fire (WTF?) you must expect the police to get involved.
the students got exactly what they wanted, with the exception of screwing other protesters in the long term
turn off sigs…it will change your life

Let's look at the facts,
1. The protest was peacful till nightfall
2. The protestor's lit an illegal bonfire- it's illegal according to the fire code
3. VFD responded as required
4. The protestors then interfered with VFD crews
6. RCMP and VPD responded to the interfence
So if this was a peaceful non confrontational protest as is claimed they failed. The interference with fire crews was confrontational and it was then that the cops moved in. And knowing fire fighters, they would have requested the cops do something as they had no clue as to the protestor's next intentions.
To have remained peaceful all it would have taken was the protestor's to have moved aside, say Good Evening, and let the fire crew do their job. They would have left and end of story.

Plus damaging relations with UBC as welll.
And in the overall scheme of things this is a wonderful country Canada is. We protest and get arrested, maybe get a couple of bruises. And maybe some rash from the plastic cuffs. But compared to other places it's not that big a deal when live ammo is used more often.

May I suggest that the next time, the firefighters be allowed to disperse the crowd themselves……nothing funnier than a soaked trustafarian.
