well you don't appear to know what you are talking about, no wonder Vangroovy is in decline, but its good for the thread
The Decline of Vancouver.
Garden suite is a fancy marketing terms people use for walk out basement suite rentals to make them sound more appealing than a basement suite. But I guess with you living in the narth you'd know better than people living in the city.
Always amazes me how some small town peeps have to constantly express their big city inferiority complex.

" What is a Garden Suite?
A garden suite is a legal, detached, ground-oriented rental suite located in the backyard of a property with a single-family home as its primary use. "
lots of goggle ^^ hits all say the samething ... better get with it

"Garden suite" was the marketing term for a shitty basement suite that had some kind of greenery at the entrance back in the day. Since the entrance was often at the back of the house it made for an easy way to make the rental seem less like crap. Regardless of what it is supposed to mean I used to see it all the time back in my "whatever costs the least" phase of living in Vangroovy.
If you didn't know this XXX_er, you are probably better off for it.

I've never heard the term 'garden suite' used as the definition XXX_er has found above. To me a garden suite was always a basement/ground floor suite that had a walk out into the garden. Interesting to see that the real definition is something quite different. I'm assuming this would be the same as 'coach house' or 'laneway house', which is how I have heard them referred to here in Vancouver.
there are a whole bunch of hits for garden suite and they are all the same, a detached structure in the garden
Garden suite sounds like something you people in the properties would say but I have never heard of a "garden suite" so i goggled
I supose it makes sense a garden suite is in the garden, coach house or lane way home are the common terms I hear for a back yard rental
as opposed to a basemnet suite that is in the basement
I think building a basement suit will be way cheaper and more stealth from the tax assesor or zoning officer than a 2nd structure in your garden

I guess Mr XXX_er didn't notice that web page is from Edmonton. He's probably also not aware of what colloquialisms are and that the use of language can vary by region. Anybody I know who's lived in metro Van for a while recognizes garden suite as a walk-out basement suite that steps out into the backyard or garden.
Maybe you can continue to delight us with a breakdown of the processes and costs of building a basement suite vs an accessory building (garden suite as you seem to understand it).
Its the same termanology in Toronto, Edmonton, Victoria
I lived many years in Vangroovy some in basement suites and i've never heard of a garden suite,
I never built any basement suites or garden suites as you want to call them
they were already built just buy the house and start charging rent
in any case I'm still pretty sure you lost the pissing match you chose to start

You know we have all gotten long in the tooth when NBR gets crotchety over the definition of garden suite. LOL. Part Breaker is probably a bank manager with 2 kids by now.
if thats as far as the career got he is probably still living in a " Garden suite " so I don't blame him for trying to distance himself from the Basement suite

lol @ the guy who brought out the pejoratives saying I started a pissing match.
The terms seems to be used different ways in different locales, strange that you're not okay with that.
