Got my new phone with Telus a few weeks ago and they offered me t-up. I don't understand it fully. $9 extra per month and when the next gen model of your phone comes out, you get to trade your 1yr old phone in for the latest version. I didn't take it cause I'm thinking theres got to be a hitch. Does anyone here know more about this upgrade plan from Telus?
Telus T-Up
Well, it costs $108 per year, and do you get to trade in your phone and pay nothing for the next fancy widget? If not you are paying $100 for the privilege of paying for a new phone every year.
Not bad actually. I also just heard of Apple Care's insurance plan if you lose or break your phone. Roughly $8 per month, then a $50 fee and you get a new phone, no questions asked. No bad if you're hard on phones and a good insurance policy if you're bound into a 3 year plan.
New phone every year for $100 is OK.
Used to be that you could hardware upgrade every two years for a couple hundred dollars, so it's about the same.

The new phone every year part is based on a new model of your phone being released. In most cases it seems that there is a new version within that time frame but I'd want to consider that aspect. If it goes 2 years, then you're looking at $216.00 paid, and I'm not sure what Telus' policies are, but my carrier (Virgin) will do an equipment upgrade at any time for $199.00 and imagine Telus has a similar policy in place…

If it sounds too good to be true….
How T-UP! works:
1. Buy any new iPhone with $99 AppleCare+ and add T-UP! for $9 per month in-store.
2. Return your device (in good working condition) after 12 months.
3. Pay the in-market acquisition price for a new device.
4. Renew your phone plan.
5. Your old Device Balance is forgiven.
iPhone 5S 32GB is currently $329 on a two-year contract. You need to buy $99 Applecare for eligibility so now we're up to $428 up front. Then you spend $108 ($9/month) so that you have the right to spend $428 (assuming flat prices) again in a year. Seems to me that you're almost in the territory of buying an unlocked phone without a contract and selling it. Or just wait out the two years until your contract expires.

Any time? No. If it were true, then you could upgrade to a 5s for $199, sell it for $600, then next day repeat.
Lay out the $200 on a phone. In two years, sell it for $200 and lay out another $200 on a new phone. Result is just the up-front $200 charge which you recoup when you end your contract. You're still covering a fair bit of the cost of the phone with the higher contract charge, but it's not as much as a premium phone costs to buy outright.

well if someone is gonna upgrade to an iPhone 5S (which is vastly superior to the 4S) I would be interested in taking that 4S off your hands. Its just gonna take up space etc…
It's better, but not vastly superior.
