I have to agree with syncro here. The reason is simple: Most people work along similar lines if they have a family and other responsibilites - and I am not talking about having a night out, drinking with friends, but about some serious commitments.

A friend of mine is working 45-50 hours a week minimum, is a father of a small child, married - and goes to a school three times a week (tuesday and thursday nights, saturday mornings) to get a better degree in his field (car suspension), gets up at 4:45 five days a week, and still enjoys his life.

If working hard puts you off, you should find out what it is that you want out of your life?

Success does not come easy, and nobody sees what you put in in order to be successful and happy. But hard work will eventually pay off if planned properly.

All well just gotta keep thinking about how hard ill try at school. And pray I can get into bcit without the 30 credits

It is worth differentiating the work though. Rewarding work and keeping busy (ie, kids, or truly liking/appreciating school) is much different then mindless boring work. Give me 60 hours of rewarding work over 30-40 hours of mindless dribble any week.

Mindless/unrewarding work also tends to be more depressing when you are doing it a lot.

Just a heads up regarding BCIT. I have been there LOTS for trade programs. Anyway I left high school in grade 11, family life was not good etc. I was working to pay rent at 16 years old and have been working ever since. The first time I tried to get into BCIT I was worried because I did not have my grade 12. They simply said that for the program I was taking (auto mechanic certification full time), I had to be over the age of 21 if I did not have my grade 12. They made me write an equivelancy exam which I passed and the rest is history. You might be OK without having the 30 credits.
As for the rest of whats going on in your life? Man up, you dont have herpes. Shit could be worse.

Life is what you make it. Ultimately you are the one in control and its up to you to decide what's best for you. Don't worry about not having 30 credits to get in. It's better to apply and not get in than it would be to not try at all and wonder "what if?".

Well I need to upgrade my grades first since you need minimum prerequisites. I'm also applying at 4 different schools, and their stipulation is the same. I'm hoping bcit though. 3 years is nice, and I'd take the risk of student loans and quitting my job.

By the summer I should have everything done, If I get in by jan 2012. I'll work all of the winter, save up enough cash, quit and pull out student loans and focus on school.

i think it varies between institutions… and i dont think its a totally clean slate. IM(limited) experience, the school wanted to see what you'd been doing in that time… i.e. was there a particular reason why you were going to school 'later' in life. I think they wanted to see that in lieu of formal education, the time spent out of school was in some way productive.
